Communication Process Worksheet

Think about a misunderstanding you have experienced with another person at work, school, or in a health care environment. Write your answers in paragraph form.

1. Briefly describe the misunderstanding, including the setting and the people involved. The misunderstanding I experienced was at work, when communication was crossed between me, my manager, and the Pathologist. I was told to do a certain project by the pathologist, and my manager had told me to get back to my desk and take phone calls. I had told my manager that I’m not supposed to be on the phone, because I’m doing a special project for the pathologist. The manager thought I was lying and she had to go talk to the pathologist that had advised me of the special project. It was later found out that I was to do the project after lunch when we usually don’t receive phone calls.

2. Complete the following table with information from your described misunderstanding.

|Question |Answer |

|What was the misunderstanding? |What my task was at the time. |
|How could you have avoided the misunderstanding? |The misunderstanding could have been avoided if I asked the pathologist |
| |when to do the task.

Resolving the challenges takes training, open communication and good listening skills. There is a need to work collaboratively and clarify the communication between all parties involved. Potential challenges can come from miscommunication and becoming defensive. It is possible that the person making the statement may have meant one thing and the person they are talking to understands it as something else. This can further complicate the crisis and create more challenge. Active listening skills, clarifying information and being aware of nonverbal communication are specific ways to avoid miscommunication. If the health care professional is not approachable, has poor verbal and nonverbal communication skills and appears defensive when spoken to, the communication challenges will continue or even become worse (Arnold & Boggs, 2011). It is essential to understand what it will take to resolve communication challenges or spot potential…

I was just starting out working as getting my clinical hours and I remember looking at my patients care plan and I didn’t see anything about this particular patient being a DNR = Do Not Resuscitate and I went into the patients room to check on this man and I realize that he isn’t breathing and I called the nurse as quick as I could and I went into the room and was about to start chest compression and as I was about to start I heard the nurse shouting at me don’t touch him. The nurse didn’t do anything as well I was upset because I was under the impression that we suppose to do everything in our power to keep these patients alive. Me and the nurse argued because I didn’t see the DNR on the man’s chart and as I sat down with the charge nurse she showed me where it was located.…
