Communication is a tool with which we exercise our influence on others, bring out changes in our and others’ attitudes, motivate the people around us and establish and maintain relationships with them. Communication makes a major part of our active life and is a social activity. This social activity is pursued verbally through speech, reading and writing or non-verbally through body language.

Communication is fundamental to children’s development; children need to be able to understand and be understood. Communication is the foundation of relationships and is essential for learning, play and social interaction.
Negative issues with poor commuincation.
Positive communication focuses on respect for the child and involves both speaking and listening. Communication is what we say and how we say it. Positive communication leads to nurturing relationships, cooperation, and feelings of worth. Poor communication can lead to kids who “turn off” adults, conflicts and bickering, and feelings of worthlessness.
Adults sometimes have difficulty communicating positively with children when feelings are involved— either their own or the child’s. There are ways for parents to improve their communication with children.
Ways of exchanging information.
Get the child’s attention before speaking.Children can only concentrate on one thing at a time. Look directly at the-child and call her name. A touch on the shoulder or taking her hand will help get there attention.Give her time to look at you before you start speaking.
Communicate on the same level as the child.Communication is more effective if both people are on the same level. Adults need to stoop down to the child’s level or sit beside them. Making eye contact with the child lets them know that they have your attention and is much less intimidating to the child.
Talk with - not at - children. Adults should communicate with children with the respect and consideration they give their friends. Sometimes, adults spend so much time talking “to” the child that they neglect the listening part of communication. Talking with children lets them know that not only do we have something to tell them, but that we are also willing to listen to what they have to say.
What is commuincation?
Communication is sharing ideas. Many people think it's just talking.
But real communication happens when you understand other people, and they understand you. Communication is more than words. You communicate by smiling, frowning and the expressions on your face. You also do it by the way you stand, and by how you move your body.
Ways to commuicate with the child?
Once the child is a bit older, there are 5 main ways he can learn to communicate:
· Learn to use his hearing and speak. · This is called the auditory-oral method[->0]. · This method teaches children to listen, read lips and speak.
· Learn to use the hearing he has left. · This is called the auditory-verbal therapy[->1]. · This method helps children use whatever hearing they have left. · This method does not encourage lipreading.
· Learn American Sign Language · This is called bilingualism/biculturalism[->2]. · With this method, children learn American Sign Language and become part of Deaf Culture.
· Learn to use handshapes that stand for sounds. · This is called cued speech[->3]. · This method gives people a way to "see" English. · It uses handshapes to "show" the sounds you can't see by reading lips.
· Learn to use some of these methods together. · This is called total communication[->4]. · This approach uses different ways of communicating together, like signing and talking at the same time.
How to choose a way to communicate
· Accept that each family is different.
There isn't a "right" choice for all children. Each child is different, and needs different things. Parents are also different, and have their own hopes for their children. Some families are able to do one thing. Some families are only able to do another.
· Be flexible.
Follow your child's lead. You may feel stressed out over choosing one of the options listed above. But many parents find that the best choice is to follow their child's lead. Some parents even combine ways of communicating. It's important to be flexible.
· Ask yourself these questions: · How much can your child hear? Can he can hear at all? · Does your child get mad quickly when you don't understand him? · Are you willing to learn a new language? · How much time can you give to help your child learn? · How important is it to you that your child learns to speak clearly? · Are there programs for the different options where you live? · What do other parents and professionals say about those programs?
Meaning of confidentality
Confidential information is personal details from our lives which we may not want to share with others. It can include our address, phone number, birth date, employment history or other personal information. It may also include information about our past or present health and development. Individuals have the right to keep information of this type private.
Child care programs routinely handle confidential in-formation about enrolled children, families and staff. When managing sensitive information, it is impor-tant for child care directors, administrators and staff to be aware of their ethical and legal responsibility to protect the privacy of individuals and families.
