Lesson Objectives:
SWBAT to identify the story elements beginning, middle, and end of story.
SWBAT to identify characters, setting, and events in story.
SWBAT to retell the story including story elements and key details.
Introduction (Opening Activator):
Tell students that they are going to learn about the beginning, middle, and end of story. Have students identify the beginning, middle, and end of common things, such as the school day, a field trip, and sounds in the word cat.

Explain to students how events can be classified as the beginning, middle, and end.
2. Give students a sentence that is mixed up and allow students to decide why the sentence does not make any sense. Explain why it is important that stories have always have a beginning, middle, and end.
3. Introduce The Very Hungry Caterpillar to students. Introduce vocabulary word caterpillar. Ask students what do you think a very hungry caterpillar eats? Allow students an opportunity to share their ideas.
4. Begin reading book to students, before reading the first page say: Let’s see what happens at the beginning of the book.
5. Read book until caterpillar begins eating and explain here is the middle of story.
6. After the caterpillar builds his cocoon, ask students if they believe this is the end of the book.
7. After reading the book, draw a column chart with columns labels, characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end.
8. Ask students who were the characters, where did the story take place, what happened in the beginning, middle, and end. Record their responses.
9. Explain to students that they can retell the story now they know the characters, setting, beginning, middle, and
