Commentary of ADHD and Suicide
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and suicide are often brought together as one is common with the other. I have reviewed a few different medical references to see if I can get an understanding of if they are connected. There are many ways that suicide and ADHD can be paired together. It can come from the atmosphere or activities they are involved in. It can be caused by treatment or lack of treatments they are on. It can be from the medications they are taking. Working with the topic of ADHD my commentary will stress on the factors of the medication aspect and parental aspect to see if they actually influence the rate of suicides in ADHD diagnosed children and young adults.
Nearly 30% of the children who are diagnosed with the ADHD disorder continue to have problems with it as they continue on into adult hood (Brooks 2013). It is stated that 4 % of the American adults have been diagnosed with ADHD and more that have never been diagnosed (Emmerson, 2014).With the young adults having problems coping with the disorder at the older age sets in more time for depression. Children diagnosed with ADHD and going through the ages of 9 to 18 have more problems with depression and suicidal thoughts. Of adults that have the ADHD disorder are depressed and the level of the depression has to do at what age the depression started. The earlier the age it started the higher level it is as the person ages if not controlled (Mann, 2010). In a study that was posted in March of 2013 of adults with ADHD and diagnosed as children and adults never diagnosed with ADHD showed that 5% more of the adults with ADHD would likely commit suicide. Nearly 57% of the adults with ADHD disorder also have another psychiatric disorder. These disorders can be substance abuse, hypomanic episodes, antisocial personality disorder, and major depression and generalized anxiety (Brooks, 2013) Depending on the

Throughout the medical field Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), has been and continues to be a popular subject for debate. As they reviewed the eleven studies that were found that addressed assessment of inpatient suicide risk, it quickly became evident that many traditional suicide risk assessment models identified the chronic patients at risk for suicide, but did not identify the truly lethal ones. Many experts stressed that the patients more likely to harm themselves showed increased signs of agitation and anxiety. In one case study of 76 patients that had committed suicide while hospitalized found that 79% of the sample exhibited evidence of severe agitation or anxiety. Busch et al. (2003). Many of the studies showed that patients were pharmacologically undertreated for anxiety and…

Generally, the effects of the medications can help one control the urge to blurt out. This makes it easier to think and process words before actually saying them. "In fact, there are many signs that your medication is working. They include being better able to pay attention… tending to think before you speak instead of blurting things out…" (Adult ADD/ADHD). The sudden urge of kindness can make it so much easier to make and or keep friends. The way our minds think causes us to say things we don 't necessarily mean. This will begin to push people away from one another. Although medication can control many things related to emotional effects, it can also add on negative effects. The use of ADHD medication can cause one to become very irritable towards family and friends. "The majority of adults who take stimulants experience rebound effects of moodiness, irritability, and restlessness as the level of medication in their bloodstream decreases" (Adult ADD/ADHD). Irritability can then lead to a negative personality change. "If you 're normally sunny and upbeat and you suddenly become all doom and gloom, it may be time to switch to another medication" (Adult ADD/ADHD). These medications can affect the hyperactivity of an individual not only positively but also…
