Combating Water Pollution
Combating Water Pollution

Water is an essential part of life. People need clean water to drink, bathe and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of this natural resource. How does water pollution occur? Some types of water pollution may occur through natural process but it is mostly a result of human activities. People use water everyday at home and in industries, approximately one hundred and fifty gallons per day per person is used in the United States (U.S Environmental Protection Agency). Used water of a community is called sewage, if not treated properly; it is discharged into waterways water pollution will occur. There are different types of water pollution. Estimates suggest that nearly 1.5 billion people lack safe drinking water and that at least 5 million deaths per year can be attributed to waterborne diseases (Water Pollution and Society). Microbiological is disease-causing organisms like bacteria, protozoa and viruses. They can cause people to get sick. A variety of chemicals from metals and solvents are poisonous to fish and other ocean life. Nutrients may cause nuisance growth of aquatic weeds and algae. Weeds can make a lake unsuitable for swimming and clog waterways. Suspended matter such as soil and wash off from plowed field causes silt when it rains. When silt enters the waterway the waters depth is reduced and ocean life and their environment may suffocate. To combat this problem I would create a detailed water pollution guide. The guide would have material on source water assessments and source water protection. This information will have ready to use materials and resources that are user friendly and easy for the audience to read. I would attend workshops on water pollution and get ideas on how to present the information to the community. Public awareness is important to helping the community understand how to protect our drinking water sources. This also includes educating people in the community on the dangers

All around the world, countries are fighting to keep their water clean. Whether it streams, rivers, lakes or the ocean, countries have taken great measures to maintain a high quality of water for both human consumption and as a key component to the environment. It is the contamination of water by foreign matter such as micro-organisms, chemicals, and industrial or other wastes, or sewage. Such matter deteriorates the quality of the water and renders it unfit for its intended uses. We deal with the pollution problems and then decide on ways to clean it up. This valuable resource is the key to survival. Both plants and animals depend on water for their growth, so the water must be kept clean. The major contributors to water pollution can be classified in three categories, industrial, agricultural and municipal.…

According to UNICEF about 2.5 billion people around the world do not have access to clean water. In the U.S. 40% of rivers and 46% of lakes are so polluted/contaminated that they are considered unhealthy for swimming and too contaminated for fishing. The water is so contaminated that there are usually no aquatic life living in it. Even though some people believe that water contamination is inevitable and will be impossible to stop, water contamination is still a serious problem worldwide because chemical waste contaminates the water which poison fish that end up being pass down the food chain to us humans and water contamination spreads deadly diseases which causes about 2 million deaths per year.…

With the start of the 20th century, the United States has become aware of the seriousness of today’s environmental issues. Today, countries with a rapid course of innovation, such as China, India and even the US struggle to supply their population with the basic necessities, like clean water. According to Lian-Jun Bao, graduate of the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, roughly half of China’s rural residents lack access to drinking water that meets the universal standard of cleanliness. For all the success that is equated with such countries, their water supply cannot keep up with their innovation and modernity.…

Water pollution is a major global problem which requires ongoing evaluation and revision of water resource policy at all levels. It has been suggested that it is the leading word wide cause of deaths and diseases,[1][2] and that it accounts for the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily.[2] An estimated 700 million Indians have no access to a proper toilet, and 1,000 Indian children die of diarrheal sickness every day.[3] Some 90% of China's cities suffer from some degree of water pollution,[4] and nearly 500 million people lack access to safe drinking water.[5] In addition to…

    * With environmentalism and green thinking reaching the pinnacle of public appeal in recent years due to global warming, an increasing focus has been put on stopping pollution, especially carbon dioxide emissions. As such, the main battle has been waged against air pollution, while water pollution has not been in the public limelight. This does not mean that the problem is any less important, or any less pervasive however. Water pollution is caused by the release of any type of foreign contaminants into a body of water, or spilled in the watershed of a body of water. Perhaps the most common causes of water pollution are simply dumping of garbage and waste. Physical trash like cans, bottles, can rings, and the like commonly accumulate in bodies of water through littering. Worse still is contamination from bacteria, worms, and viruses present in sewage. Many undeveloped countries dumb sewage straight into rivers, lakes or the ocean. Industry also causes water pollution in the form of chemical runoff and spills, as well as heat, or thermal pollution, caused by allowing unnaturally heated water to enter natural bodies of water. Other toxic metals, salts and acids are dumped into water bodies from industrial processes.…

What would you say the most valuable thing on earth is? Many people would quickly answer that something with monetary value, like oil or gold, would be the most valuable thing on earth. However, humans are able to live, and have lived, without utilizing these things for many years. There is a thing that every living being, creature, and plant on earth could not survive without. It is one of our most basic needs, and yet we take it for granted so often. You probably encounter it once or more every day, perhaps without a single thought of its value. Some humans go so far as to unwittingly, or even sometimes knowingly, contaminate our sources of this precious necessity, often doing unfixable damage to our already limited supply. The most important thing to us, or at least, what should be the most important thing to us, is water.…

Water pollution has become increasingly troubling in the last few decades. Even though many new laws have been enacted to try to protect the water sources there is still much work to be done to keep the water systems of the world clean and pollution free. One way that information can be spread about the problems regarding water pollution is by writing water pollution articles. Water pollution articles are very helpful ways to get out information about the causes of water pollution as well as the devastating affects of it. When water pollution articles are distributed to the general public it raises the awareness of the problem which help to change public opinion. If no one knows that water pollution is a problem than nothing can be done to fix it. By writing informative and well written water pollution articles a lot of good can be done for the environment.…

On Wednesday, July 10th, 2013, at approximately 12:47pm, Mr. Tom Anderson led our group on a tour through the City of Akron’s Water Pollution Control plant. The weather was very humid, with a temperature of 84 degrees F, but felt like 97 degrees F. On this tour we learned that the purpose of this plant (which was built in 1928) is to take all of the used water and waste from the municipal sewage lines from Akron and the surrounding suburbs and run it through a cleaning process to remove the harmful bacteria, chemicals, particles and other pollutants, that come from our toilets, baths, washing machines, garbage disposals, sinks, drains, runoff from the streets and groundwater. The plant manages to do this by running the water through a series of operations, prior to releasing it back into the environment.…

In 2011 Water Quality Annual Report of Seattle, I find good news: Seattle’s tap water continues to be some of the best in the nation. (“Water Quality,” 2011) When I first came to Seattle, I realized that the taste of water in Seattle was different from my country. That confused me for a long time until I saw the report and helped me to confirm water quality in Seattle was good. From my own experience, I firmly think the water quality in America is better than in China generally. Therefore, I decided to do some research on water quality in America. There is a law in America called “The Clean Water Act”. In this paper, I will focus on the act and figure out what it is. I will also show how the US government protects clean water, what kinds of policies they have regarding the Clean Water Act, how the executive branch enforces these polices and how we can participate in that.…

In this experiment water quality and contamination of groundwater were investigated. First, I will observe the effects that many pollutants have on groundwater. I predict that in this experiment the oil and vinegar will create the largest quality of contamination to the water, while the laundry detergent will just create a bad smell to it. Considering the smells and thickness to these ingredients I think that it will cause the water quality to have a bad smell and cause the water to be very cloudy. Once filtering the contaminated water, the water will be clear and purified. Second, I will experiment water treatment and filtering. I predict that once the contaminated water is treated and filtered that it will leave me with little or no contamination in it. Then for the last experiment, I will determine the difference between bottled water and tap water to discover any contamination. I predict that the tap water will be the most contaminated and with the most chemicals in it, while the bottled waters; Dasani and Fiji will be completely filtered and free of any chemicals.…

Water is probably one of the most important resources we have. People can survive without food for several weeks but without water we couldn't live for more than a week. Millions of liters of water are needed every day worldwide for washing, irrigating crops, and cooling industrial processes, not to mention leisure industries such as swimming pools and water sports centers. (Internet Source) Despite our dependence on water, we use it as dumping ground for all sorts of waste, and do very little to protect the water supplies we have. There are several threats to our water resources. Oil spills kills thousands of seabirds and can wreck water desalination plants and industrial plants drawing their water from affected coastline. (EBSCO CD-ROM source) Poor management of existing water resource can lead to these resources running out or at least shrinking. Much of the pollution in the rivers and seas comes from chemicals, mainly from agriculture. Another pollution issue, which is not brought up often, is thermal pollution. As you can see we have many problems in our waters and we need to protect the waters.…

Water pollution causes many problems that affect people and animals in their daily lives, and can harm health, as well as cause death. First, about 10 percent of all dredged material, which is chemical waste, is polluted with heavy materials and dangerous substances. When these materials find their way into the ocean, marine organisms suffer toxic effects and seafood is often contaminated (“Ocean Pollution” 4). This is causing the marine life all around the world to get hurt by human activity. By doing this, fish are also affected and therefore people are too because we eat fish. A writer from the New York Times states, “Studies indicate that drinking water contaminants are linked to millions of instances of illness with the U.S. every year” (Duhigg 1). This shows that by contaminating our waters, we are in turn just hurting ourselves. And, it isn’t just happening in the United States. In “Water Pollution”, it states, “Water pollution…
