Color Guard Leadership Essay
When I first signed up for guard, I had no idea what I was getting into. But when I got into it and performed, it became a PASSION. Guard has made me more mature and responsible. There are a lot of characteristics and qualities that come to my mind when I consider the leaders in my life and the influence that they have had on my values, skills, and knowledge of what makes an effective leader. In bringing together the various characteristics and qualities, I have a portrait of what an ideal leader can and should be. A good leader has great vision. He knows where he wants to go and he knows how to motivate people to believe in the same vision he has for his group and life. He views things as what they could be and not what they are. A good leader is a very passionate person. He is intensely obsessed in whatever he is focused on. He also has compassion for his fellows. While he has goals to accomplish, he consistently cares for the individuals that support him. A good leader is not a selfish individual only thinking about his wants and needs. Also, a good leader is determined in attaining his goals. It is undeniably true that the key to leadership is accomplishing the tasks at hand while building relationships. I want to be in a leadership position because I have a real passion for guard and I want to help my fellow guardies and be a positive role model to them and inspire them. I want to contribute everything I have to offer to this program. To me, extra practices, time spent to help others learn the choreography, helping with equipment, and many other things a leader is chosen to do, is not a work, but a privilege. These tasks would not bother or frustrate me, because as long as it’d help my peers, I’d be happy to do anything to help. I’d handle all obstacles, whether they concern individuals, the team, a routine, or equipment, in an effective way that would help the team grow. Even though I’m fairly new at color guard, my enthusiasm and

Leadership is a very powerful trait that many wish to possess, but only few have the ability to appropriately carry out the task. It is a trait that is not only God-given, but also learned throughout life as we are given many leaders to observe as we journey throughout childhood and into adulthood. With my service in the military approaching 28 years, I have been blessed with the opportunity to serve under some very talented leaders within my varied career in the Air National Guard. I’ve also been given many opportunities to travel to a variety of places and countries that most people that I grew up with in Mississippi only dream of visiting. Since joining the Air National Guard in 1989, it has been a rewarding career both as an enlisted…

During my time in high school, both inside and outside of school, I often had the reoccurring thoughts of a necessity to go somewhere with my life. During my senior year of high school I began to realize as any young man that comes to that part of life that I was about to begin to make choices on their own for the first time. I was the first in my family to be getting an education past high school and the pressure was on me to further my studies and like the son of immigrant workers I was expected to go above and beyond the point where my parents arrived. I was all for going to school and getting a degree but then reality struck and I had to begin to think of ways of paying…

As a member in the National Guard the idea of serving a dual mission to my State and the Nation is unique from my perspective. My first responsibility is to take care of the people I live around, essentially my community. Almost everyone has seen or maybe heard of Guard units helping different communities deal with the ongoing threat or aftermath of floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms and other emergency situations. Also during times of civil disorder, social or political, the citizens of my state can be assured that their Guard force will be “Ready When Called”, if needed. The ability to give back to my own community and share what the Guard has done for me on a daily basis is a great feeling. Membership in the Guard has a positive influence on civilian jobs. As a paralegal in the guard for my state, I have acquired the skills and a certain level of leadership that is sought after by many civilian employers. Some guard soldiers find their civilian and military jobs complement each other, while others seek to add diversity to their lives and skills by serving in the Army National Guard in a capacity quite different than their civilian occupation. As a paralegal and soldier in the guard, both are part of the dual profession and one team concept. We are on the same team fighting the same…

Being a leader for a large group means more than just a title. As co-drum major of my high school marching band, I had to use leadership to help the group has had to overcome. The title bears numerous responsibilities and in various styles, but choosing to lead by example while having a sense of humor has shown as the most effective way of leading for me. Performing as a marching band requires lots of dedication and hard work; however, when the group starts lacking in motivation to progress, a leader must step in. For the group to overcome these issues,we had to get together and discuss what was keeping the group from progressing. Leading by example is not enough for a group to follow, sometimes it requires actual action as well. I use my sense…
