Color Guard Captains
There are very few people who are lucky enough to be a captain of a team. I am one of those lucky few people. On April 12, I had an audition to try out for a Color Guard Captain position. I had been waiting for that day since early February. On April 15th, the captains were announced. I heard my name, looked at Makayla Hurt, she heard her name, and we could not believe it. Over the weekend, I thought what can I do to help improve the team. Well I can improve skill, change attitude for the better, and how will the decision I made along with our coach of me being a captain affect the team. Besides all the practice and attitude, the captains are looked up to from all the girls on the team whether they are older or younger. As a captain we are to help improve the skill of the other girls on the team. A discreet captain will not put herself above others. She may be better, but she should never make it so obvious it is obnoxious. …show more content…
As a weapon captain, I am in charge of the weapon line which is mainly upper classmen that have surpassed spinning the flag and now spin rifles, and or sabers. Being a freshman trying out for a captain position is a big deal. After talking to our coach, I lost faith in myself because she told me I have a timorous personality. A captain must be able to speak her mind. Besides being shy and a freshman, I was competing against my Guard sister, Bailey Wilson. Our coach had a hard time deciding between a freshman with technique and the sophomore with a voice. The entire time, I worried how this would affect the team or Bailey’s relationship with me. When captain were announced, two hearts were broken, one because a girl did not get the flag captain position and one because she did not get the weapon captain position. Putting a freshman with such high potential and passion for what she loves will better the other girls on the team in the long

    The term captain is synonymous with the term leader. By definition, a leader is someone who is in an advanced position to take the initiative in order to go forth and show the way. A dance captain should be able to make intelligent and creative decisions quickly and efficiently. Dance teams are all about unity. An exceptional group glides across the floor with all of its dancers moving as one. There are no individual standouts. No weak links. But there is one person whose job is to make the team as strong as possible, on the floor and off. It’s one thing to be a good team player, but it's another to be a good captain. Few will have the opportunity to feel the weight of the responsibilities and the happiness of knowing you're making a difference. Being captain of any type of organization in my eyes is a huge job. It’s teaching respect by showing respect. It’s helping 11 girls, including myself, strive and push themselves to be the best dancers I know we all can be. Having the title of captain doesn’t mean being the boss of everyone, being in the front in every dance, or just thinking that the captain should come before everyone else. Captains are the inspiration of the team. They’re the person that everyone on the team looks up too. Being a natural born leader is also a big role of dance team. That means having self-confidence, good communication skills, courage, clear desire to make progress towards a goal, and a fair degree of understanding your fellow teammates. Being a captain requires you to focus on the big picture, doing what’s best for your team even on your worst days. If you’re negative, the team will take on the same attitude, even if everyone else has had a great day. As captain of your dance team, you’ll definitely encounter some sticky situations, like having to confront your friends when they aren’t practicing full-out or telling an injured teammate that she’ll have to sit out a performance.
