Color Guard Captains
There are very few people who are lucky enough to be a captain of a team. I am one of those lucky few people. On April 12, I had an audition to try out for a Color Guard Captain position. I had been waiting for that day since early February. On April 15th, the captains were announced. I heard my name, looked at Makayla Hurt, she heard her name, and we could not believe it. Over the weekend, I thought what can I do to help improve the team. Well I can improve skill, change attitude for the better, and how will the decision I made along with our coach of me being a captain affect the team. Besides all the practice and attitude, the captains are looked up to from all the girls on the team whether they are older or younger. As a captain we are to help improve the skill of the other girls on the team. A discreet captain will not put herself above others. She may be better, but she should never make it so obvious it is obnoxious. …show more content…
As a weapon captain, I am in charge of the weapon line which is mainly upper classmen that have surpassed spinning the flag and now spin rifles, and or sabers. Being a freshman trying out for a captain position is a big deal. After talking to our coach, I lost faith in myself because she told me I have a timorous personality. A captain must be able to speak her mind. Besides being shy and a freshman, I was competing against my Guard sister, Bailey Wilson. Our coach had a hard time deciding between a freshman with technique and the sophomore with a voice. The entire time, I worried how this would affect the team or Bailey’s relationship with me. When captain were announced, two hearts were broken, one because a girl did not get the flag captain position and one because she did not get the weapon captain position. Putting a freshman with such high potential and passion for what she loves will better the other girls on the team in the long

    Dance Team Captain

The term captain is synonymous with the term leader. By definition, a leader is someone who is in an advanced position to take the initiative in order to go forth and show the way. A dance captain should be able to make intelligent and creative decisions quickly and efficiently. Dance teams are all about unity. An exceptional group glides across the floor with all of its dancers moving as one. There are no individual standouts. No weak links. But there is one person whose job is to make the team as strong as possible, on the floor and off. It’s one thing to be a good team player, but it's another to be a good captain. Few will have the opportunity to feel the weight of the responsibilities and the happiness of knowing you're making a difference. Being captain of any type of organization in my eyes is a huge job. It’s teaching respect by showing respect. It’s helping 11 girls, including myself, strive and push themselves to be the best dancers I know we all can be. Having the title of captain doesn’t mean being the boss of everyone, being in the front in every dance, or just thinking that the captain should come before everyone else. Captains are the inspiration of the team. They’re the person that everyone on the team looks up too. Being a natural born leader is also a big role of dance team. That means having self-confidence, good communication skills, courage, clear desire to make progress towards a goal, and a fair degree of understanding your fellow teammates. Being a captain requires you to focus on the big picture, doing what’s best for your team even on your worst days. If you’re negative, the team will take on the same attitude, even if everyone else has had a great day. As captain of your dance team, you’ll definitely encounter some sticky situations, like having to confront your friends when they aren’t practicing full-out or telling an injured teammate that she’ll have to sit out a performance. But it’s…

While her sister is a captain, Alyssa doesn’t really enjoy being in charge or in the spotlight, and let her sister take the job. She said in our interview, “Jenna has always been the one that would want the spotlight and wants to help improve the rest of our teammates. That’s not what I really enjoy doing, but I know she will be great!” She started playing tennis in 3rd grade at the same time Jenna did, and was also on the Varsity team Freshman year. Early in life, my family instilled in me exceptional integrity and values, and emphasized the importance of respect and hard work. Passed to me through a strict upbringing, these values and personal qualities have given me a steadfast foundation upon which to further develop myself as both a man and a leader. In preparation for an appointment, I have pushed myself greatly on all fronts. Academically, I have consistently pursued the most challenging opportunities available to me, and have excelled in doing so, all while maintaining the responsibilities of year-round sports, a job, youth group, and clubs. As team captain of two sports, president of the Beta Club, and a youth leader in my church, my time is often spread thin between the duties of each, but I feel that I have flourished in these positions, and feel a natural calling for leadership. Physically, I have trained hard to meet and exceed the standards set forth by the academies, and have participated in some of the toughest and most mentally demanding sports available at my school. I have pushed myself not only to prepare for a service academy, but for my subsequent life in the service; as I hope to have demonstrated, I am extremely passionate about serving and protecting my nation, and will pursue this pathway regardless of my acceptance into a service academy. Although I still have much to learn, I am confident that I am qualified to meet and maintain the high standards for which the service academies are…

Colorguard is a sport that requires leadership, diligence, and self-discipline. Although not many people realize, it takes immense skill and strength to toss the equipment and incredible stamina to be able to dance for about a three to seven minute show. Not only that, but the activity holds values that have really inspired me to become a better member and a better leader, such as "we before me" and "hearts on fire, minds on ice". The colorguard is only as good as its worst member, and it is the responsibility of all members to exercise and practice leadership in this activity in order to make the year successful. Because I have done colorguard for such a long time, I am a crucial member of the team, and it has been my responsibility to teach the newer members and be a good example and role model.…

    The Naked Citadel

Having a woman cadet was seen as a challenge to The Citadel’s firm traditions. One of the cadets said- “she would be destroying a long and proud tradition”(Faludi 82). The Citadel’s administration and cadets simply follow the traditions and reject her. According to their beliefs, strength and bravery is men’s territory. They thought they were teaching men to protect women, because women needed protection from the rest of the world. But in reality they were teaching them to hold power over women, to beat them and overreact if these women didn’t do exactly what they wanted. One of the cadets admits, “the great majority of guys here are very misogynistic…all they talk about is how girls are pigs and sluts” (Faludi 82). This showcases the student’s need for domination, and over-empowering of anything they feel is beneath them. Their egos are also under attack. The President of the Citadel admits if women were enrolled there would be “a different form of intimidation- not wanting to be embarrassed in front of a girl”(Faludi 83). Bringing women in will further these hidden insecurities of the cadets, and it is seen as a threat to the men’s power.…

Being an active player in the OMHA for just over ten years now, has allowed me to appreciate and take great pride in the game of hockey. Not only have I been educated in the sport, but have also been taught essential values that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Time management is a skill that all hockey players require; from attending practice on time, to balancing the timely sport with schoolwork, it is undoubtedly beneficial. As the assistant captain, my mission is to build chemistry within our team by encouraging new players to bond with the entire lineup. Similarly, I must lead by example for all other team members to follow. Overall, I strongly believe that playing hockey has enriched my quality as a leader today and in the future.…

My name is Kaleigh Gonzales I’m a 15 year old sophomore and I’m running for the 2014-2015 officer position of reporter for Armwood High Schools FFA Chapter. I feel I should be selected for this position because not only am I a people person but I am also extremely organized. I think this would make me be able to effectively and efficiently get the Armwood FFA’s chapter name known to the public. I would also try to do this by doing any and all public service projects we can get our hands on, then publishing our successes. I believe that to make a difference you have to be known and respected by the community around you. In the past three years I have served as Vice President for Burnett Middle School for two terms and Treasurer for Armwood high school for one term. In this time I’ve competed many events including forestry, land judging, vet assisting, OCC, creed speaking, and extemporaneous public speaking. By doing this I’ve gained lots of experience and love in our great organization. I believe to be this year’s reporter I have to not only work on our clubs public media aspects but also work hard in competitions to win and better our chapters’ reputation. If I were to describe the technique in which I lead I would have to say that I plan , I tell others my plan , and then I depend on my team to help me. They tell me where they specialize in and what they want to do for me, and we work form there. I try to let people do what makes them happy while still helping me. I can make a personal promise that I will always work my hardest to make FFA my top priority, a position like this requires my full attention. My other activity I engage in is that I am a First sergeant of alpha company in JROTC, this means I am the second in command of one of three company’s in our schools only JROTC battalion. I promise that my responsibilities there will not interfere with my responsibilities regarding FFA. Some activities I want to do this year are competitions like OCC and…

As I enter my final season of soccer as a senior captain, I have the opportunity to take all the experiences and lessons that shaped me into the person I am today and instill them into the minds of the underclassmen on the upcoming team. Team captains from the past three years taught me that the combination of perseverance, a strong work ethic, and empathy can lead any team or individual to greatness. The transformation from my awkward, apprehensive fifteen-year-old frame of mind to my confident, spirited eighteen-year-old self excites me as I enter the world of college with the opportunity to grow as a leader and a student and become an impactful member of society. The sport of soccer allowed me to develop the social and problem-solving skills necessary to pursue an engineering career. My personal journey of overcoming difficulty to reach greatness throughout high school has molded me into a person who is eager to face new challenges and benefit the lives of…

As a captain, I need to be a leader for my teammates both on and off the court. What makes this year special is that most of our members are new to the team. Therefore, we all start from the same level, we practice and improve together as a team. As I mentioned, this is a completely brand new team. I am not looking for any place, but I do hope that the team can understand the importance of teamwork and remember to communicate on the court. Most importantly, I hope they can always be positive and cheer for each other at all time. In fact, losing a game doesn't mean it's the end of the world. It is simply a chance to improve yourself, every failure lets you discover your strengths and weaknesses. From that, it offers you an opportunity to work on them. So, I do hope the best for my team as I am excited to see how they will play in the tournament. Having been on the team for four years now, I would say I am the most experienced player on the team. I believe that I am well aware of the flow throughout the tournament. This can ultimately help me to give them pep talks before and during games. This can motivate the team to success as well as help them out of a troubled frame of mind. No matter how contentious the game, I will always cheer for them and support them.” said girls team captain Amity…
