Color And Symbolism In The Book Thief
Like Liesel, Death has “a mountain to climb” (86). For Death, that mountain is overcoming his fear of humans. As we see through his narration of The Book Thief, he attempts to do so through color. The colors allow Death to distract himself from this fear and also reveal to us how he feels about the characters. At the beginning of The Book Thief death uses the colors black, red and white to symbolize the nazi flag. While death uses color he also uses his fear and perceptions of humans because death’s indecision about whether the human race is good or evil. But from Death’s analysis, human beings are capable at various times in the book of being good or bad.
