College Campuses And Rape
One in four college women have either survived rape or attempted rape, according to OneinFourUSA.org. How many more girls should go through this trauma before something is done? College is supposed to be a safe place to learn and grow. It shouldn’t be a place where women live in constant fear of being assaulted. College campuses should provide a course in bystander intervention and support groups to help lower the rates of sexual assault on campus.
There are many college campuses that are quite large. It’s easy to be caught up in your own little world and not focus on anyone else. No one wants to intervein in a situation that doesn’t involve them. But what if it saves a life? OneinfourUSA.org states that 5% of women on college campuses have experienced rape or sexual assaults. The scene may look like a guy is trying to swoon a pretty college girl, but what if he’s trying to take advantage of her? Students need to be properly taught how to intervene in situations like this. Amie Newman states that a program created by Canadian psychologist, Dr. Charlene Senn, trains young women to “assess, acknowledge, and, if necessary, rebuff unwanted sexual advances”. Newman claims that through this program, the chances of young female students bring raped reduced to 50%.

A simple word that should put an end to anything that is asked, especially sexual assault. Unfortunately, the world is not perfect. It’s up to us to make a change in the world. Starting with your local university is a great start to put an end to sexual assault. Colleges should provide a bystander intervention course, if they do not have one already. It helps students know what to look for in a situation that could turn to sexual assault. There should also be support groups for the victims. They need to know that they’re not alone and give them a chance to get their life back. Hopefully, with these small gestures, we can put an end to sexual assault on college
