Coefficient of Restitution (Cor) of 3 Balls
How does the COR affect different types of sports balls bounce on different types of surfaces?

AIM – the aim of this experiment is to find out how the COR (coefficient of restitution) of 3 balls (tennis ball, snooker ball and ping pong ball).

FORMULA USED FOR COR –

GPE (after) = KE (after)
GPE (before) = KE (before)

mxgxHr = ½ x mx Vout² mxgxHd ½ x m Vin²

Hr = Vout²
Hd Vin²

APPARATUS–
• meter stick,
• tennis ball,
• ping pong ball,
• snooker ball,
• surfaces; wood and carpet

METHOD - I will firstly organize all the apparatus that are needed for this experiment.
1. I will make 3 tables for my results to be recorded in.
2. Then I will get my partner to hold the meter stick firmly with one hand.
3. In the other hand of my partner, the first ball will be held.
4. My partner will drop the ball from a height of 100cm.
5. I will keep at eye level and watch closely
6. I will record the height, to the nearest cm, of the highest point that the ball bounces to.
7. I will repeat this method ten times on wood, and then ten times on carpet.
8. I will then bring into play the two other balls, and do the same as I have done with the first ball.

PREDICTION – I predict that the tennis ball will bounce higher on wood than the other two balls. Reason being that the tennis ball is lighter than the snooker ball and requires less force. The material used is also a factor that will help it bounce higher than the ping pong ball.

RISK ASSESMENT – Item Risk Reduce hazard Implementation
All balls used
(football, tennis ball, ping pong ball) Some balls may be heavy and hurt someone Be sure to keep a safe distance When I let go of the ball, I made sure I moved back.

There were no other significant hazards.

DIAGRAM OF EXPERMIMENT-

Results -

Tennis Ball -

1st bounce 45 47
2nd bounce 44 55
3rd bounce 43 56
4th bounce 45 45
5th bounce 43 52
6th bounce

If aluminum bats have a greater trampoline effect than wooden bats , then aluminum bats will hit the ball a greater distance. This hypothesis is true based on the information gathered, from the aluminum bats. The first, second, and third aluminum bats ball averages were much higher than the wooden bats ball averages. This proving the aluminum bats hit the ball a much greater distance than the wooden bats . The aluminum bat has a flex when the ball hit the bat making…

Think about different materials that are used to make sports balls. Why don’t we use just one type of material for tennis balls, baseballs, and golf balls? Since each ball must behave differently in play, the material making up each one must be different, too. In this experiment, you will characterize how different materials behave when they are dropped.…

To setup the experiment we had to use three meter sticks and two standard tennis balls. We took all three of the meter sticks aligning them vertically up against the wall. Taping them into place we were then able to use them to measure the height of the dropping point. Using our eye sight we had to determine how far up the ball bounced up on the meter stick. We then proceeded to find three appropriate heights to drop then tennis ball at. Dropping it three times at each height and then averaging the data. On the soaked tennis ball we would soak the ball for two seconds before each drop. We also measured the weight of each ball before dropping them. After doing this 3 times each and receiving our averages we were able to create our data and see the relationship between the two.…

I choose this experiment because i like doing stuff( projects, experiments.) in sports. I think this is a good experiment is a really fun and it falls good in the topic. I also chose this experiment because i think it’s really easy to do by yourself and i have all the materials to conduct it. i also chose this experiment because i’m kind of like an expert in this topic because i have been in football for like 3 years so i think i know alot about the balls grip and how it affects the length. I think i will help out football players like Qb’s to know if a better grip will help it go farther.…
