Managing Resource Constraints in China

Background
China is a major and expanding market for Coca-Cola. Surging sales in emerging markets like China and India have been credited for Coke’s best sales growth for almost nine years with sales rising 19% from 2007 (The Times, 2007).
According to President of Coca-Cola China, Doug Jackson, the company currently counts China as it’s fourth-largest market in terms of revenue, although it is expected to overtake Brazil to become its third-largest in two years and the second-largest within five years (China Daily, 2007). Having invested $1.25bn since entering the country in 1979 (BBC News, 2007), Coca-Cola now have 36 bottling plants and plan
‘significant investment in infrastructure’ over the next year according to Jackson
(China Daily, 2007).
However, Coca-Cola faces a significant obstacle in its quest for growth in this emerging market. The country suffers from uneven distribution of water reserves and exceptionally low water resources per capita, just one quarter of the world average.
Four hundred of the six hundred largest cities face water shortages (OECD, 2007).
Water is a global challenge for Coca-Cola. The company have reported water quantity and quality as a material risk to its business since 2003 (Business for Social
Responsibility, 2008) and have faced this issue before.
Notably, their bottling plant in Kerala, India, lost its license to operate in 2004 when the company was accused of using an unfair proportion of the local community’s natural water reserves (The Guardian, 2003).
Coca-Cola subsequently went to the High Court to have the decision overruled, but as David Cox of Coca-Cola Asia said; “the issues undoubtedly had a short-term significant impact on sales” (Ethical Corporation, 2003)
This clearly demonstrated the potential pitfalls associated with taking a short-term view during business planning, rather than examining the issues that contribute to long-term business success. In this case,

    I don't think that Coke can stay up with changing tastes for non-cola drinks. I believe that Goizueta did have the right idea to develop new products, but Coke fell behind after some embarrassing problems within the company, such as the 1999 contamination scare, their slowing unit growth, ugly class action racial discrimination suit (which result in a $195.2 million settlement with 2000 employees), and an aborted takeover offer for Quaker Oats and its Gatorade Sports drink brand. Losing out to PepsiCo in the Gatorade battle left the company with a weakened strategy of beefing up its "fizless" soft drink products. Daft plans to launch coke's first U.S. coffee brand, Planet Java, but the problem now is that they have not dominated this market at all yet. The competition (Pepsi and Starbucks) are well established companies with very well recognized brand names. I think at this point, the most he can expect is for Coke to take half of the market share. For example, Sony came out with the first ‘walkman' portable tape player. If apple had come out with a walkman as well they could have expected to take over half the market at most. By creating the ipod, a completely original and different idea, they were able to take over the entire market. The difference here is that people personalize food and drink. It is hard to introduce new products because people become accustomed to what they like. When they consistently enjoy a certain product, there is a certain comfort level they have to that food or drink, and therefore people usually reject new products.…

    When Pharmacist John Pemberton invented Coke in 1886, it was the original energy drink claiming to have restorative powers. The original ingredients of Coke also included a small amount of Cocaine, but this was eliminated from the ingredients in 1903. Coca-Cola is made of water, sugar, a few secret flavors and some bubbles. But behind the product itself is where marketing has played a key role in Coca-Cola’s domination of the market place. Coca-Cola promises more than a beverage, it promises good cheer and happy memories. In the early 1900’s it was exceptionally difficult to decipher between Coca-Cola and Coca-Nola - amongst other competitors. Eventually Coke set itself apart with a design challenge that led to a bottle design, created by Earl Dean in 1915, called the “hobble skirt.” This design would forever set Coca-Cola apart from it’s competitors. Robert Woodruff – head of Coca-Cola for nearly 60 years, starting in 1923 - was also credited with many brilliant ideas including: the six-pack, standardized cooler, and tieins to Olympic events. Woodruff also promised to bring Coke to the US troops during WWII for only a nickel. This promise lead to extreme loyalty from those 11 million Americans that returned home. With artworks done by Norman Rockwell and the association Coke made with Santa Clause, Coke once again, found ways to associate their brand with Americana and wonderful memories. Eventually Pepsi entered the scene with a happy little jingle and offered twice as much soda for the same amount of money. By 1983 Coke only held 24% of the market share. Pepsi was beating Coke in the market. In April of 1985 Coke changed the formula of their soft drink. This outraged consumers and was ultimately an epic failure - turned into a big win.
