COACH CARTER ESSAY
In the movie Coach Carter, the Coach uses every kind of management styles to communicate with his basketball team.
Coach Carter first uses Autocratic. An autocratic manager likes to be in control and has absolute power. He takes no account of other people’s wishes or opinions and uses rewards and punishment to achieve objectives. His decision making is centralized with a strict hierarchical chain of command. He is task orientated and uses one way communication. One scene where coach carter is using autocratic management is at the start of the movie, when he first joins the team. He gives them contracts to sign and tells them that they should attend every class and sit in the front and that they should get a 2.3 score. He also tells them that the “key to winning in here (the gym) is the key to winning out there (stadium)”. He is strict towards them and tells them they should have respect or they get out like he did with cruise. Coach carter tells them that “if you are late you will run, if you give me attitude you will give me push up.” Being autocratic to them makes them start winning basketball games.
The second management style Coach Carter uses is Persuasive. Persuasive means, the action or fact of persuading someone or of being persuaded to do or believe something. The Persuasive manager tries to convince that his decisions are correct. Exactly the same as autocratic but he tries to persuade his employees that he is right. One scene where coach carter is using Persuasive management is where he locks up the basketball gym because some of the players have failed one of their classes and orders them to meet him in the library. He says to them “Gentlemen, you have failed to up... No I’m sorry. We have failed. We have failed each other. Now, there are some of you who have upheld this contract. But know that we are a team. And until we all meet the terms of this contract, the gym will be locked.” Everyone starts arguing about it and Cruise

    Gary Nash Essay

In the essay by Gary Nash, “ The Forgotten Experience” he argues that the reason for the American Revolution was not caused by the defense of constitutional rights and liberties, but that of living conditions of America were not very favorable and that social and economic factors should be considered as the driving force that pushed many colonists to revolt. The popular ideology which can be defined as “resonating most strongly within the middle and lower class of society and went far beyond constitutional rights to a discussion of the proper distribution of wealth and power in the social system” had a dynamic role in the decisions of many people to revolt. The masses ideas were not of constitutional rights, but the equal distribution of wealth in the colonies that many felt that the wealth was concentrated in a small percentage of the population in the colonies. The Whig ideology that was long established in English society had a main appeal towards the upper class citizens and "had little to say about changing social and economic conditions in America or the need for change in the future." The popular ideologies consisted of new ways of changing the distribution of wealth. Nash in his essay provides good evidence to prove his point that the American Revolution was not caused by the defense of constitutional rights and liberties, but by improper distribution of wealth. A major ethnical problem was the introduction of slavery and the rights slaves were entitled too. Nash uses a witness, Thomas Peter, in describing the conditions of slave life during the breakout of the revolution. Most of the slaves were taken as property of the British army and manipulated by receiving absolute freedom to their duties preformed. During the revolutionary time, black Americans took advantage of wartime disruption to obtain their freedom in any ways possible. Blacks constantly fought to receive their rights just as equal to a white man’s. Hence,…

Autocratic leadership, also known as authoritarian leadership is a leadership style characterized by individual control over all decisions and little input from group members. Autocratic leaders typically make choices based on their own ideas and judgments and rarely accept advice from followers. Autocratic leadership involves absolute, authoritarian control over a group. It can also be derived as a dictator, domineering and aggressive behaviour. An autocratic leadership can be beneficial in some circumstances such as that decisions have to be made quickly without consulting anyone, also when projects sometimes require strong leadership so that things can get accomplished quickly and effectively. Some team members may actually prefer the autocratic style this can let the team focus on performing tasks without worrying about the decisions that have to be made, this style of management does have its problems managers / team leaders can learn to use the elements of this style wisely and correctly. As an example autocratic management can be used effectively when the leader has the most knowledge and has access to information that can make the task more productive. This style of management is best used when the team are primarily unskilled workers, casual workers or new starters.…

Although Shirley had great athletic skills as a soccer coach, she had surrendered her All-American high school position as basketball coach early on in her college career. This tells me that she was not as skilled in the techniques and current training methods that were needed to coach her new inherited basketball team. Shirley was a structured (task-oriented) leader, who believed that she got results by keeping the team constantly busy, while closely monitoring their exercise drills. However, she completely ignored their personal issues and emotions, with how they felt about the new strategy of offense training. She ignored their experience and suggestions and continued to tell them her way would work. It would have been better for Shirley if she had combined the Consideration (follower) leadership style along with some of the Structure style, because she would have been respected for her openness for team suggestions, while still being able to explain her own reasoning as to why she chose the motion…

Through the first part of this paper, I hope to portray and articulate several theories and lessons that I learned from reading the Coach Holtz book. I believe the number one lesson that was driven home throughout the semester and even came up in the Lou Holtz readings was how to become an effective leader. This topic is very important to anyone that is put in a position of superiority because you must get the people that you are in charge of to complete their tasks. Personally, I feel this is one of the cornerstones of being an effective college coach and mentor to leaders of tomorrow.…

The authoritarian coaching style, demonstrated mostly by coach Boon, helped the team become more cohesive and strong. He believed in perfection, pushing his athletes to the limit, and being in control. During practices, if an athlete made a mistake they would have to run laps as a punishment. Sometimes during games, it seemed like all he cared about was winning. On one occasion, coach Yoast decided to show this style of coaching by getting angry at a referee for making unfair calls on their team. Authoritarian coaching styles encourage control but can be very effective when trying to coach a large team or complete tasks.…

Have you ever imagined not having a coach for your sports team? Or why your coach is so successful? Even though they are very demanding, they’re essential for any team’s success. “I demand a lot out of my players, but we have fun and I give them room to learn and make mistakes,” said Coach Mike Bates. They provide structure and are the heart and souls of each team. Coaches have to love the game. The team reflects the coach, if he’s successful so will you be. The coach needs to be disciplined and teach the fundamentals of the game. They should instill moral values into the team.…

Leadership style is the recurring pattern of behaviors exhibited by a leader. In this movie we can see how much leadership is important. Bringing together two totally different people was not an easy task, and without the leader they had it would have never worked. Coach Herman Boone was the man everyone looks to for advice, he might not have been the most respected, but he had a plan and the motivation to accomplish it. Most leader- behavior research is focused on two dimensions of leadership style, the concern for the task to be accomplished and the concern for the people doing the work. In this movie both these styles were apparent, we could see the…

Both the trait and behavioral approaches to studying leadership rested upon the premise that a set of universal traits or behaviors could be identified that would reliably discriminate between successful and unsuccessful leaders. Eventually such research began to permeate sports. For example, Penman, Hastad, and Cords tested the degree of correlation between coaching success and authoritarianism. Penman et al. found that more successful coaches, in comparison…
