Clover Valley Dairy Company
In the fall of 1978, Vince Roth, General Manager of the Clover Valley Dairy Company, was considering whether a newly developed multipack carrier for yogurt was ready for market testing and, if so, how it should be tested. Since 1930, the Clover Valley Dairy Company had sold, under the trade name Valleyview, milk, ice cream, and other milk by-products—such as yogurt, cottage cheese, butter, skim milk, buttermilk, and cream—in Camden, New Jersey. The raw milk was obtained from independent farmers in the vicinity of Camden and was processed and packaged at the Clover Valley Dairy. Clover Valley’s sales had grown steadily from 1930 until 1973 to an annual level of $3.75 million. However, between 1973 and 1977, a series of milk price wars cut the company’s sales to $3.6 million by 1977. During this time, a number of other independent dairies were forced to close. At the height of the price wars, milk prices fell to 75 cents per half-gallon. In the spring of 1977, an investigation of the milk market in Camden was conducted by the Federal Trade Commission and by Congress.     Prior to 1961, the law did not apply to manufactures of dairy products. A companion law adopted in 1957, known as the Loss Leader Prohibition Law pertains to all types of businesses, but certain of its provisions are incorporated by reference in the Dairy Industry Unfair Practices Act. As the name suggests, this law prohibits a broad range of trade practices in the sale of milk. Among the prohibitions, is the provision that no manufacturer, distributor, wholesaler, or retailer may sell, offer to sell, or advertise for sale, milk and specified milk products at less than cost for the purpose or with the effect of injuring a competitor or destroying competition. The banning of other practices evidently is designed principally to aid in the enforcement of the prohibition of selling below cost. Indeed, I was surprised to read Nelson (2010) that, “Raw milk stands alone as the only food that has ever been outlawed, and its advocates point out that it took a constitutional amendment to ban alcohol,” (p. 3). Nonetheless, the movement seems to be gaining in popularity. The Oake Knoll Ayrshire farm in Foxborough, Massachusetts owned by the Lawton family is a perfect example of the momentum that the raw milk movement has gained. “Lawton figures that she has 200 weekly customers, versus just a handful two years ago,” (Gumpert, 2008). The journey which began in 1990 has seen the growth of the Indian dairy industry from the liquid milk market perspective. Milk powder and other commodities were never the center stage activity for our organization at Suruchi Consultants. We have been tracking the liquid milk business very closely and UHT attracted our attention somewhere in 1996 when we got active at Nepal with our operations. I got the first close mega view of this technology at a trade fair at Cologne , Germany in 2000. I was impressed with the technology, speed, benefits , etc which this could give to the customer. By that time I was living with a conviction that “packaging is something that adds some value to a given product by adding a little of cost and it also protects the product and the customer from any kind of quality deterioration.
