"Cloning represents a very clear, powerful, and immediate example in which we are in danger of turning procreation into manufacture" said Leon Kass. Cloning is very controversial topic in the world today. Some say cloning is playing God and some say cloning is correcting our mistakes. Whatever you may think scientist all over the world are studying the affects of cloning. Some of the most divisive talks of cloning are over the cloning of endangered species and cloning animals for consumption. This paper will review the each these topics in further detail.
Animal cloning is a fairly recent scientific advancement that 's been on the radar since about 1996. Genetic engineers have developed a method that can be used to prevent the extinction of endangered species. Although it sounds complicated, the procedure is quite easy to understand. First the scientists obtain cells of one of the few remaining animals of the desired endanger species. Tissue samples from each of the animal are stored in vials, which are submerged and frozen in liquid nitrogen. The cell nuclei containing DNA are inserted into unfertilized eggs that have been extracted from a member of the species to be cloned. The eggs are then fused with the cells containing the DNA. Each egg-cell fusion eventually develops into an embryo. The resulting embryos are implanted in another animal from the desired endangered species, who acts as the surrogate mother. The surrogate mother then births the desired genetically identical replicas of the animal from which the DNA-containing cells were obtained.
While animal cloning may have a role in the preservation of endangered species, it cannot conquer extinction on its own. It 's important to think about what caused the deterioration of a species in the first place, we have to consider the root of this devastating problem. Animal cloning is a band-aid solution to mass extinction

According to West C. Economic and ethics in the genetic engineering of animals. Harvard J Law Technol., "The primary application of genetic engineering to wild species involves cloning. This technology could be applied to either extinct or endangered species; for example, there have been plans to clone the extinct thylacine and the woolly mammoth.”(West C. Economic and ethics in the genetic engineering of animals. Harvard J Law Technol.) Cloning extinct animals will change the world as we see it today. If these animals are brought back to life, humans need to realize that life will be different with huge creatures roaming the earth. This technique should be done only to the extent to save endangered animals so they do not go extinct. However many fear this will get out of hand and researches will misuse the technology. Most importantly, even if extinct species were brought back to life, where would they live? That environment is far gone as well. Many problems also result with cloning. As stated by the Genetic Science Learning Center, “Cloned animals that do survive tend to be much bigger at birth than their natural counterparts.(...)This can lead to breathing, blood flow and other problems.”(Genetic Science Learning center) This is important because cloning is causing more bad results, than it is good. Animals are being cloned against their will for the pleasure of humans. People need to become aware of these…

In an NBC news article, the author stated, “Scientists are one step closer to bringing a woolly mammoth back to life” (Ghose). Her statement proves that animal cloning is not a dream or idea anymore. It is now a reality and scientist from all around the world are utilizing animal cloning. Cloning in general has evolved its technology over the years and has become more advanced. In fact, author Jacqueline Langwith wrote an article on animal cloning, which started, “Animal cloning has entered the world of horse racing and other equestrian sports.” (Langwith). Many people are excited to clone their favorite or most successful horse. An example that Jacqueline cited was, “An Italian Haflinger foal named Prometea was the first cloned horse” (Langwith). However, cloning is a new type of science that is…

Over the years, science and technology have expanded to make it possible to create identical creatures. While new cloning technology is a great advancement, it raises a plethora of moral and ethical questions. Cloning may bring about new ways to find cures for babies, according to Philip M. Boffey, but cloning also “could usher in a new eugenics”. The problems produced from the prospect of cloning greatly outweigh the benefits.…

Jurassic Park, a cult favorite, seems to be a scary work of fiction. What most do not realize is that there are efforts taking place right now to make the processes of reversing extinction a reality. This process, coined as ‘De-Extinction,’ is defined as using intact tissues of extinct animals to clone them and introduce them back into existing ecosystems. These efforts are taking place all over the world: the United States of America, Australia, Poland, and Russia. (Zimmer, 2013) This process includes taking fragmented DNA from preserved specimens, piecing the fragments together, placing the DNA in an emptied egg, and planting the egg in a female of similar lineage to the species being cloned. (Archer, 2013) The first attempt at this process was in 2003 when Spanish scientists attempted to clone the cells of the last Pyrenean ibex, Celia. The…

Though many people dismiss the idea of cloning as a way of destroying nature’s diversity, cloning techniques can potentially become life savers for many. The ability to clone will allow scientists to duplicate new, needed organs for patients thanks to therapeutic cloning. Endangered animals will be able to become striving species overtime due to reproductive cloning. Infertile women will once again be granted the gift of giving birth, all creditable to reproductive cloning.…

Reproductive cloning continues to rise not just in certain places like the U.S.. It also raises the question of how much would it cost and who would have access to it. In Jurassic Park Dr. Hammond was a multi-millionaire who had connections that helped him make a park and be successful in cloning dinosaurs. Researchers say they can only bring back extinct species that have died within the past few tens of thousands of years who left remains that have ells intact or at least ancient…

A little clone bucardo, named Celia, changed the world’s perspective on extinction in a matter of the ten struggling minutes. This trial that took place in 2003, where reproductive physiologists created a clone from the DNA of a now extinct animal, the bucardo, and implanted a number of eggs in 57 goats. Only one goat had a successful birth. Unfortunately, ten minutes after the bucardo clone was born, Celia, she had died because of a grown-in lobe on her lung. Since the cloning had occurred, scientist have been exploring and discovering new and improved ways to revive an extinct animal, and have found that it is, indeed, possible. Activists of de-extinction want to provide redemption to these creatures since we, as human beings, were the ones who destroyed their kind in the first place. Fernandez-Arias is one of the many researchers who is…
