Case: Cliftex Theatre

Problem Statement:
Phyllis Gamble and her business partner Mechelle Slaughter must decide if they should update the projection system in their historic theatre to digital. Digital offered certain advantages that their current system did not have. Most theatres today have made or are making the switch. The biggest problem with the switch for the two ladies is the cost.

Symptoms of Problem:
The old system in the theatre is not as good as a digital system. The picture and sound of a digital system will come in much clearer for the audience. Since everyone has begun to make the change to digital it is only a matter of time before their current system become out dated and they will not have film to show.

Key Issues and Constraints:
The biggest issue for the owners is that they want the theatre to become a sustainable operation. The theatre does not operate with a profit. The goal of the owners was to purchase the old theatre renovate it, and then get it to operate as a profit so they can sell it to a local who can operate the theatre. With this system cost could be too great. It will cost the owners 75,000 just to install the system. Repairs are expected to be more with the system also. It will be hard to make the theatre become profitable by adding digital projection.

Key Assumptions:
The key assumption is that the patrons would benefit from a switch to digital. I believe this assumption is inaccurate. The people that use the theatre are locals. I do not see the quality of the picture increasing being a big deal for them. They are just happy to come to a theatre that has such a unique experience and is close to the. They would give up quality of the picture for quality of the experience.

    Even though QuadPlex Cinema has market power, it is losing money. Even though a firm has market power, when they increase price the demand will fall. The measurement of market power is based on the availability of substitutes. Since there are no more cinemas extremely close by, QuadPlex inherently has some degree of market power. As a way of measuring market power, they can use the Lerner index. It states L= (Price - Marginal Cost)/ Price. The higher the index number, the more market power the firm has. However, they cannot raise prices indiscriminately because thanks in part to today’s technology there are readily available substitutes to those willing to use them. We have Netflix, RedBox, cable, satellite TV with pay per view and others. There is also the availability of streaming TV and movies over the internet from the comfort of our home. QuadPlex can either increase the price or decrease their expenses in order to increase profits. As we learned previously, the price can only be raised as high it will allow until the marginal revenue equals the marginal cost. If the management just tries to raise prices up as high as they can reasonably get away with, business may in fact suffer even more than it already has.     From as far back as making films go the 35mm camera has always been around, for over 100 years now and if you watch a movie made on 35mm you can understand why. The effect it gives off is something else its not terrestrial TV style and it's just right, except one thing the price tag on the actual film celluloid. Unfortunately there is no substitute or cheaper equivalent to 35mm for recording a movie. However as we have advanced in the world of technology we now have a camera that is capable of recording with similar sharpness as 35mm The Digital Video Camera. The main difference between film and digital video is the cost of recording and the look it personifies. Other differences include the weight ease of duplication and transportability. For a long time digital recordings suffered from inferior sound and image quality when projected onto large screens, but recent advances in computer processing storage and projection have overcome this problem for their use in theatres. Just in terms of the equipment needed a digital production is about a ¼ less than the cost of 35mm film production. Unlike film, digital formats require very little physical storage space. One of the downfalls is they can be easily duplicated and uploaded to the internet and a good point if this was legal is the film will not lose any of its quality in the process.…
