Part 1 Cleopatra
Carefully read the following extract several times. How does this passage characterise the relationship between Antony and Cleopatra and how does this compare to its portrayal in other Roman Sources in Book 1, Chapter 1?
In this extract Antony is portrayed as being besotted with Cleopatra even after she had betrayed him. The extract also indicates Antony cannot live without Cleopatra ‘Why delay any longer, Antony? Fate has taken away the one excuse which could still make you desire to live’ (Plutarch, in AA100 Assignment Booklet, 2012, p. 20). Cleopatra also seems to have more power over their relationship and has captivated Antony that much he too feels he should take his own life after being told of her death ‘O,Cleopatra, …show more content…
Although the genre of both paintings are Bathers, there and many differences between the two paintings.
The picture space of Cézanne’s Bathers is in an open, and very bright space, whereas Correggio’s Leda with the Swan picture space is very dense. Both artists have used an outdoor setting with the use of trees in the back ground. The eye is immediately drawn to the nude woman portrayed as Leda in Correggio’s painting, this is also the brightest part of the painting. The light appears to be coming from the bottom right hand side of the painting, whereas the light in Cézanne’s Bathers appears to be coming from the picture plane, as though the light is coming from the actual world rather than the picture space.
To create an allusion of distance Correggio has used Aerial perspective. He has used more intense colours in the foreground and paler colours in the background. He has also used two point perspectives as there are two vanishing points in the painting, one on the left hand side of the painting and one towards the right hand side between the trees, from both points we can see the mountains fading in the background. Cézanne has used a single point perspective as there is only one vanishing point, where a tree in the distance can be seen. Cézanne has also used bright and pale colours …show more content…
There is an obvious contrast between light and dark colours in Correggio’s painting giving a quite dramatic effect. The contrasts of light and dark colours in Cézanne’s Bathers are minimal, causing a less dramatic effect. Both artists have also used tints in their paintings to produce lighter colours although Cézanne has used this more. Correggio has used unsaturated colours to produce a more subtle effect and has used shading to distinguish the lit areas from the unlit areas. Cézanne has used saturated bright colours. The colour ranges of both paintings are narrow as both artists have used a limited palette of colours. Cezanne has used mainly greens, blues and whites suggesting a more calming mood and Correggio has used mainly browns and black creating a more dramatic
