Cleome Rutidosperma Research Paper
The hypoglycaemic and antihyperglycaemic effects of methanol extract of the leaves of Cleome rutidosperma (Cr) DC (Family: Capparidaceae) was investigated in Wistar rats. Fifty normoglycaemic male rats (120g-200g) were divided into groups A (hypoglycaemic study; n=20) and B (antihyperglycaemic study; n=30).
The studies had one control group and three groups administered with Cr (100, 200 or 400mg/kg) respectively. Group B had two additional groups of diabetic-untreated rats and glibenclamide-treated diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced in Group B rats (except control) fasted overnight for 12hours by intraperitoneal injection of Alloxan (100 mg/kg body weight). Cleome rutidosperma (Family: Capparidaceae), commonly known as fringed spider flower or purple Cleome, a native of Tropical Africa and found as garden weed in Asia and Australia is one of such medicinal plants. The leaves are prepared as hot water infusion or chewed whole for management of DM. A dearth of information exists on scientific verified of this pharmacological effect. Rats in group 1 served as the control for this experiment. Cr extract was administered to rats in groups 2, 3 and 4 at doses of 100, 200 or 400mg/kg respectively. The rats were fasted overnight (12hours) before the commencement of the hypoglycaemic study and the fasting blood glucose levels were determined.     The banded anteater (Myrmecobius Fasciatus) is a small marsupial found only in Australia. To provide evidence that fenugreek could potentially serve as an anti-obesity component to a drug, an experiment on newborn rats was done by Drug Research. Newborn rats were injected with Monosodium glutamate for 4 grams per kilogram from day 2 to day 14 after birth on alternating days. Monosodium glutamate is a manufactured amino acid that is toxic and can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, and excessive weight gain (http://www.global). On day 43 to 70, each rate was treated orally with an extract of Trigonella foenum-graecum seeds. What was discovered was that during the time period that rats were given the extract of Trigonella foenum-graecum seeds, the rats had restored liver functions and lipogenic enzymes that were close to normal level.
