Classroom Management

My particular approach to classroom management is to keep things in order and to provide a safe, comfortable classroom environment for my students. All students will be treated equally. Students will have a list of rules and guidelines to follow. Students should feel comfortable in their learning environment. A comfortable environment will allow the students to actively participate in class activities and discussions. I feel that it would allow students to open up and express their ideas openly. My approach to classroom management would be to get to know my students and have them introduce themselves to the class. I would allow the students to inform the class and myself of their interests, cultural backgrounds, and their strongest dimensions. Another approach to classroom management is the way the class is set up and decorated. In most of my elementary classes my teacher decorated her class with bright colors. Decorative posters and charts from the different subjects such as reading, math, language, science, social studies, and art. I would also display their work weekly to make the classroom more visually appeasing and fun. Classroom rules and weekly objectives will be written on the board as a reminder to my students. I will discuss them with the students verbally. Classroom furniture would be arranged into groups for group discussions and activities. The number of students to a group will depend on the number of students I would have. Classroom material will be organized and locked away in a secure place. Students will have monitored access to the material when the material is being used. Parents and student academic reports will be monitored weekly.
Motivation is very much needed in a learning environment. As a teacher, you should motivate your students to be responsible when it comes to their education. When doing classroom activities students should have rules and regulations to follow. Motivating the students to participate in class activities, complete their homework, getting to school on time, and being nice to others is a good way to manage your classroom and encourage students. Students should obey the rules and regulations of the classroom, respect themselves and others, be cooperative, and understand the teacher’s purpose. Rewarding your students will also motivate them. Rewarding the students makes them feel great and encourages them to keep up the good work. As a teacher you should have the power over your students. Your internal desire and actions should be a reflection to what you expect from your students and all classroom participants. Your students should know that you are in charge of the classroom. Instead of writing rules for the students to follow, you should discuss them with your students so they can fully understand your classroom rules.
Discipline in the classroom is another form of classroom management. I will have a set of rules for my students to follow. I would also have a behavior chart for my students. The behavior chart will be broken up into four colors of blue, green, yellow, and red. The color blue will indicate that the student had a great day, blue would indicate that the student received a warning, yellow will indicate that the student lost a privilege, and red would indicate that the student parent and principle was notified about the students misbehavior. A student should accept and understand the consequences of their action. I would have my students write about the rules that they have broken and why they broke that rule. I will also have a problem solving strategy for my students. The strategy will consist of a list of things the student could have done to avoid breaking classroom rules. Assertive disciplining is also an approach that I would use when it comes to discipline. As stated, each student will have a behavior chart that will reflect their daily behavior. I will inform my students when they are breaking rules and misbehaving. I feel that a student should obey their teacher and others at all times. My philosophy will focus on teacher responsibility to control the students. Students should obey rules because it is their responsibility. Being obedient is the right way to be. I feel that good behavior should be rewarded and bad behavior should face consequences. Talking to the students will also help them understand the purpose of disciplining.
Teaching styles is great way to manage and control your classroom. Teaching styles should be based on the way your students learn and how you run your classroom. As a teacher you should have instructional strategies. Teachers and students must learn how to adapt to each other. Students should be able to learn and understand each subject matter. When going over a specific subject you should frequently ask questions to see if the students are paying attention. All students should focus on what the teacher is doing in order for them to understand. Teaching styles should also be based on the way your students learn. Some students learn easily when you verbally teach them instead of having them read from books. Going over things step by step provide the students with a clear understanding on how to perform a certain task. As a teacher you encourage students to engage in discussions. Teachers should demonstrate the procedure that they expect the student to follow. Student centered learning activities should be incorporated in the classroom. All in all, classroom management is very important. By managing your classroom it allows you to develop strategies that work best for you as the teacher and for the students.
