Modernity, Consumerism and ‘The Women’

In the 1920s, ‘modernity’ swept through America, with a enormous economic shift that transformed the pre world war one country from a society still rooted in a predominately agricultural small town past into the worlds primary industrialized urban nation with the formation of the city. It was through corporate capitalism, mass production and consumerism and the process of the mass media that this was done. Where Paris was THE city of the 19th Century, the 1920s New York city skyline boasted an arena for the circulation of bodies and goods, and the exercise of a consumer driven era, and it was women that were taking on these new roles of the consumer. Gone were the days of the 19th century cult of domesticity and in its place emerged the ‘new woman’ of the 1920s. Opportunities in all walks of life emerged for women, the possibility of work outside the home emerged and female secretaries sprung up throughout the new cities, thus enabling them to go shopping and become socially visible. This new ‘Female Marketplace’ fueled women’s desires for power, freedom and pleasure. Companies took advantage of this desire by advertising the purchase and consumption of mass-produced commodities such as cosmetics, fashion and home furnishings, saying that they were life’s ultimate gratification’s and worthy female activities. As Stewart Ewen suggests;

Women were being educated to look at themselves as things to be created competitively against other women, painted and sculpted with the aids of the modern market. (EWEN, 1976: 172.)

This cultural revision of femininity was conducted primarily through the mass media. This mass media came in the force of the Hollywood Film Industry, which responded to the ‘needs’ of women both as consumers and as the ‘modern’ woman. It is in this essay

    Media depicts women in a subordinate role in relation to men. Media objectifies hyper-sexualized representations of women in order to appeal to the male viewer. Codes of Gender unveils methods used in photography to perpetuate the idea that females are dehumanized subordinate objectified figures. These codes or methods include various actions, poses, or positions female models are forced to perform.     Due to the new world before them, the twenties women denied the traditions of the nineteenth century. They also gained independence and fought for the same freedoms men had. This is when the woman was transformed. As a result of the Jazz Age, women needed to be able to move freely. The women of the twenties also strived to look “manly.” In order to look more like men, they tried to flatten their breasts by tightly wrapping them with strips of cloth. Their clothes were straight and loose as possible, to hide their curves. They cut off their hair and dyed it jet black. The flapper was born.     This essay will be an analysis of the identity of the gaze in mainstream film with a brief insight to the pattern of looks. The film I have chosen to focus on is Pretty Woman (1990, Director Garry Marshall, Produced by Silver Screen Partners, USA). The plot evolves around a young girl (Vivian) in Los Angeles, who makes her way through prostitution. A chance encounter with a businessman, leads her to fall in love and change her lifestyle. The film brings forth ideas of societal perceptions, attitudes and responses to particular woman, and this essay will highlight these and show how the director has responded and displayed this in his work. I feel “Pretty Woman” (1990) is an appropriate film choice, as I feel observation through other contemporary mainstream films would not be as significant or effective.     In Friedan’s chapter “The Happy Housewife Heroine,” she critiques the stories run in popular women’s magazines such as Ladies’ Home Journal, McCall’s, and Redbook during the 1950s. Her frustration becomes very evident when detailing the “fluff’ presented to women. Friedan observes, “The new mystique makes the housewife-mothers, who never had a chance to be anything else, the model for all women” (92). Donna Seaman explains, “[Friedan] cites many blood-pressure-elevating examples of an “unremitting harangue” of “deceptively simple, clever, outrageous ads and commercials” that imply that “the great majority of American women have no ambition other than to be housewives” (1). It is no surprise that Friedan so easily found examples of articles and journals targeted toward the ideals of the feminine mystique. Popular magazines printed very few articles that portrayed women as anything but content housewives. After reviewing numerous articles and advertisements from The Washington Post, critic Mei-Ling Yang observed a stark contrast in the content presented to women in the 1950s. As fashion changed though women's social empowerment so began the sexual objectification of women in advertising. The iconic figure of the Roaring 20’s was the Flapper. In Edsels, Luckiest and Frigidairies: Advertising the American Way, a flapper is defined as “A women who could vote, work, drink, and smoke".
