Classical Conditioning Analysis
Classical conditioning is defined as ‘’ a learning process by which a subject comes to respond in a specific way to a previously neutral stimulus after the subject repeatedly encounters the neutral that already elicits the response’’ (Freedictonary.com, 2013). Classical conditioning involves forming a link between two stimuli having a learned response as a result. There are three stages in which this happens Stage one: Before conditioning, Stage two: During conditioning and Stage three: After conditioning. Stage one includes a repetitive stimulus, which will automatically get a response. This is called a naturally occurring stimulus (NS) For example, salivating to the smell of food is a naturally occurring stimulus. Stage two the process of …show more content…
Usually during this stage for learning to happen the UCS must link to the CS in order for it to be strengthened, however, this isn’t always the case, if for example, you were ill after having too much to drink and every time you smelt the same drink, if made you feel ill or you had food poisoning from a certain food and the same happened every time you smelt the food. Stage three, now the CS and UCS have created a conditioned response (CR) (Examples found in appendix 1) (Simply Psychology, 2013). Pavlov did many experiments including Pavlov’s Dog experiment. Pavlov believed that there were some aspects of a dog’s behaviour that did not need to be learned such as, they don’t learn to salivate whenever they see food, this is a unconditioned response. Pavlov proved this by placing a bowl of food in front of a dog and measuring its salivary secretions (see appendix 2). Although, Pavlov learned that the dog would salivate in any place he would associate food for example, when the dog saw Pavlov’s lab assistant. This must have been learned as there was once a point in which the dogs didn’t do it, therefore once this started this meant their behaviour

    Classical conditioning was developed by Ivan Pavlov 1849-1963, Pavlov worked with dogs to see how their digestive systems worked, Pavlov attached the dogs to a harness and he attached monitors to their stomachs and mouths so he could measure the rate of salivation, he noticed that when an assistant entered the room with food the dog would begin to salivate. Pavlov speculated that the dog was salivating because it had learned to associate with the assistant when the assistant was bringing food. This was when Pavlov developed his theory, food automatically led to the dog salivating, he then called this an unconditioned response. Pavlov then gave the dog food when the bell was rang to see if the dog would associate food with the bell. After a few trials the dog learnt that the bell was associated with the bell, eventually the dog began to salivate when the bell was rang without food. This was then named the conditioned response of salivation to the conditioned stimulus of the bell.…

    2. Pavlov explored the phenomenon we call classical conditioning, in which organisms learn to associate stimuli and thus anticipate events. This laid the foundation for John B. Watson’s behaviorism, which held that psychology should be an objective science that studied only observable behavior. 
Pavlov would repeatedly present a neutral stimulus (such as a tone) just before an unconditioned stimulus (US), such as food, which triggered the unconditioned response (UR) of salivation.     Classical conditioning was a theory developed by a Russian psychologist called Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936). He was working with dogs to investigate their digestive systems.     Conditioning, in general occurs more rapidly when the conditioned stimulus is unfamiliar rather than familiar. High order conditioning is when a CS can be used to produce a response from another neutral stimulus (can evoke CS). There are a couple of different orders or levels. Taking Pavlov's dogs as an example (Ryle 1995), where light is paired with food. The food is a US since it produces a response without any prior learning.
