Classical conditioning
The behavior I have is a fear of flying. This behavior developed when I was younger on an international flight back to the U.S., there was a bad storm and the turbulence was really bad and the plane felt like it was dropping out of the sky. Also there was another instance where I was flying through the mountains in a propeller plane. These particular planes do not fly as high as say a Boeing 757 or a jet, therefore you feel every single wind gust and bump. As the plane was descending into our destination the plane would ever so often drop to where we were bouncing out of our seats. Since those two incidents I have since flown again, however I get anxiety as we are ascending and once above the clouds I feel a sense of safety and no longer feel anxious or fear the plane is going to crash. The Neutral Stimulus I identify with is “flying”, The Unconditioned Stimulus is identified as “Turbulence” and lastly the Unconditioned response is identified as “anxiety” and fear the plane is going to crash. Therefore the Conditioned Stimulus is flying and the Conditioned Response is Anxiety. The conditioned response exhibits Stimulus Discrimination. I do not receive the feeling of anxiety when traveling by any other means, nor when I am high in the air (i.e. rollercoasters or Ferris wheels). I only receive the feeling of anxiety when I am boarding the plane and once we are ascending until the plane reaches above the clouds. From that first incident my anxiety grew which in tail caused me to miss a lot of important events and trips. Especially as I was a young child during this period my mother did not want to impose any more stress then normal as it could start to affect my life in a general sense. As I grew older trips became more frequent (i.e. Graduations, funerals, family reunions) all of which required a plane as form of transportation as the area being traveled to was frequently further away than my mother was willing to drive. The second flight I took was a complete

Classical conditioning is a type of learning in which a potent stimulus obtains the ability to evoke an innate response that was originally elicited by a neutral stimulus. In classical conditioning, a UR is an event that occurs naturally in response to some stimuli. On the other hand, a UR is the stimulus that naturally and automatically triggers a response without learning. A CS in classical conditioning is an originally neutral stimulus that, through learning, comes to be associated with some unlearned responses. Finally, a CR is the learned response to the originally neutral but now conditioned stimulus (CITE BOOK). These are the basic components involved in classical conditioning. Classical conditioning theory was first discovered and described…

Learning is more than a person sitting at a desk and studying off a book. Everything that we do is a result of what we have learned. We respond to things that happen to us, we act and experience consequences from our behavior, and we observe what others say and do. Psychologists explain our many experiences with basic learning processes.…

Classical conditioning is a method of conditioning in which associations are made between a natural stimulus and a learned, neutral stimulus. I consider classical conditioning to be very important because it’s such an efficient way of teaching, training or conditioning people or animals, especially children. Classical conditioning could be used for psychological distress like phobias. For example, Mary cover jones put a child with a fear of rabbits in a room with the rabbit far way. Then she gave him his favorite food and put the rabbit closer. Associating the pleasure of food with the feared object made him no longer scared of rabbits. This applies to my life because my mom used this method when she raised me. I was scared of riding my bike because I fell off it once. So every time I attempted pedaling she would give me a dollar. Finally she put 5 dollars all way down the street and told me to bike there and get it; making me lose my phobia of bikes.…

The behavioral perspective that exemplifies how external environmental events condition our observable behavior. People and animals behave as they normal would everyday due to their environment and past experiences. Scientific methodology takes up a huge part in behaviorism and how studies can be objectively measured. Our environment and what we are faced with daily affects our observable behavior (aka our response). When it comes to the behavioral perspective, there are two types of conditioning: (1) classical conditioning and (2) operant conditioning. Classical conditioning is a process in learning by association and determining what our behavior is. Operant conditioning is the process of learning by consequence and rewards. I believe operant conditioning is seen more commonly today with the parenting style for kids and the obedience process of animals. If a child is punished for wrong-doing, they likely will not do that task again. But if they are never told right from wrong, they will continue doing things that are frowned-upon. Operant conditioning is a very good way for parents and pet owners to teach right from wrong. Classical conditioning is good for…

Classical conditioning is defined as ‘’ a learning process by which a subject comes to respond in a specific way to a previously neutral stimulus after the subject repeatedly encounters the neutral that already elicits the response’’ (Freedictonary.com, 2013). Classical conditioning involves forming a link between two stimuli having a learned response as a result. There are three stages in which this happens Stage one: Before conditioning, Stage two: During conditioning and Stage three: After conditioning. Stage one includes a repetitive stimulus, which will automatically get a response. This is called a naturally occurring stimulus (NS) For example, salivating to the smell of food is a naturally occurring stimulus. Stage two the process of…

The phenomenon studied by Pavlov is an interesting one to consider. (Myers, 2010) Trying to choose a personal experience that reflects classical conditioning was difficult. There were many obvious choices, so it took a while to choose one. When I was a little girl I attended a funeral with my mother. One of the hymns played at the funeral was “In the Garden”. Being a funeral, it was a very sad event and there were many tears. Afterward, my mother said to me, “I want that song played at my funeral”. To this day I cannot hear that song without tears coming to my eyes. I hear it and imagine my mother’s funeral.…

As early as I can remember, my house growing up was always free of bell peppers. My mother is allergic to them; even the smell makes her sick to her stomach. I always wondered if I was allergic to them as well, but never took any chances as a child and didn’t eat them either. Even to this day when dining out with my parents my mother always asks “are there bell peppers in this” her face would always have that crinkled up nose, that look of disgust on her face when she says it, as would anyone who has a food allergy especially to a common food like bell peppers. From this experience I learned not to like bell peppers either, as a young a child develops that sense of acceptance he or she want to be just like them, my sister is exactly the same way about bell peppers. This experience was learned primarily without intention by classical conditioning.…

Our understanding of classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and observational learning has allowed us to unlock many of the answers we sought to learn about human behavior. Classical conditioning is a technique of behavioral training, coined by Ivan Pavlov, which basically states that an organism learns through establishing associations between different events and stimuli. This helps us understand human behavior in an assortment of ways. It makes it clear that almost everything we do is based on patterns of stimulus and response. For example, if you were bitten aggressively by a dog as a child, you may be still scared of dogs today. That is because the dog caused you pain, which in turn caused you have anxiety towards dogs. Because you associated the dog with pain, and the pain caused you to have anxiety, therefore you brain associated seeing a dog with feelings of anxiety. Same thing applies to getting a text message. Let’s say you’re sitting around doing nothing an all of the sudden your phone vibrates. You’ll probably go and check to see what message you got. This relates to a classical conditioning experiment because you have associated your phone vibrating with getting a message.…

The conditioning of the plane could be neutral stimulus, and the activities on the plane is the unconditioned stimulus. During conditioning of the plane is the neutral stimulus, which is paired with the activities on the plane that is the unconditioned stimulus to produce the unconditioned response, that produces the fear that Lauren has when she is on the plane. After conditioning the neutral stimulus the plane has now become a conditioned stimulus and it produces a conditioned response that is similar to the unconditioned response. This means that Lauren's fear now starts when she sees the plane, and not when…

According to the National Institute of Mental Health in 2012, 30.5 % of people had arachnophobia– the fear of spiders ("Fear/Phobia Statistic," 2012). This fear was ranked third out of the top ten most common fears. Some people believe that this fear is learned by means of classical conditioning. If arachnophobia can be classically conditioned then there would need to be an unconditioned stimulus (UCS), an unconditioned response (UCR), a neutral stimulus (NS), a neutral response (NR), a conditioned stimulus (CS), and a conditioned response (CR). The unconditioned stimulus would be the feeling…
