Contemporary Approaches to Management:

There are four Approaches to Management that have been utilized over time.
The first approach to discuss would be the Systematic; This approach was used primarily in the 19th century during the Industrial revolution. It was simple to meet the high consumer demand and production of the era, Business would set much defined duties and procedures for employees, they would then define the task of these defined duties. In today’s terms this may be considered an early for of micro-management. Management would then have very specific and deliberate ways of gathering, handling and analyzing information. Everything was very controlled and specific in it processes. This made for less time worrying about employees and worrying about internal issues and efficiency.
Fredrick Taylor Felt this system was not very effective due to low production and pay.
He determined to reach better production levels that research needed to be done to better able understand all aspect of how to better manage these process. He determined that management should use a scientific approach for each element of one’s work, they should scientifically select, train, teach and develop workers, and that management should cooperate with workers to meet objectives, and divide duties among managers and works evenly. Lillian Gilbreth looked at this method and took it to the next level utilizing her degree psychology to concerning herself more about the works over all well being to promote higher production.
Max Weber a German Socialist decided that Bureaucracy was the best manner to take on management to take out variables of the individual person that could reduce performance.
HE did this by organizing Management into several specific and defined levels of hierarchy.
He thought that Division of Labor, Authority, Qualifications, Ownership, Rules and controls was the most effective way of keeping variables such as a manageress capabilities ( strength and

It had one main focus and this was on the efficiency of work processes, either through bureaucratic management that focuses on rules and procedures, or scientific management which concentrates on the one best way in which a job can be done.     Weber created a formal system of organizations and administration designed to ensure effective and efficient practices called principles of bureaucracy. The principles of bureaucracy are based off five principles that are similar to Henri Fayol’s system of management which is based off fourteen principles. Both state that it is critical to have authority to lead the employees and to hold them accountable for their actions. Max Weber's fourth principle states that “Authority can be exercised effectively in an organization when positions are arranged hierarchically, so employees know whom to report to and who reports to them.”(p.50). this is similar to a principle that Fayol had. Fayol stated in his Line of authority that “The length of the chain of command that extends from the top to the bottom of an organization should be limited” (p.52). If this is known and a chain of command is stated then it can be determined who needs to report to whom with decisions. Both men also showed concern for equity. These two had systems for performance that led to rewards. Between motivation and leadership, many similar themes are possible. Both analyzed jobs, positions, and individuals. They believed that authority needed to lead employees and hold people accountable for actions.…

He claims that as society becomes more integrated and complex, organizational elites come to be more dependent on specialists and experts, or bureaucracies to advise and influence them on decisions.     Frederick Taylor (1856-1915) was the founder of the scientific management theory during the time of the Industrial Revolution. The management theory developed to organize and teach work process in a scientific manner increased productivity and profit. Taylor believed that using a scientific method for each element or task of an individual’s work would increase productivity. A worker’s job could be measured with scientific accuracy by using time and motion studies and the expertise of experienced workers (managers). A scientific system was established to hire, train, and promote workers based on their competence and abilities and match them to the most appropriate job. She was the one of the first theorist in the early twentieth century to emphasize the importance of psychology into scientific management (Kelly & Kelly 1990).
