Classic Texts
A classic text does more then tell an interesting story. It has many features such as that it gives us insight into specific historical events, highlights issues or concerns that are still around today, they can also last the test of time by still being relevant in the modern world and finally classic texts can serve to warn us of repeating the same mistakes made in the past. Any text that has these characteristics can be classified as a classic text. The novel 'Animal Farm', the extract from 'Pride and Prejudice', as well as the 'Martin Luther King Speech' (MLK speech) all have these characteristics and so they are therefore classified as classic texts.
Classic texts give us insight into specific historical events.
Pride and Prejudice shows this feature in the social side of the historical events. It tells the story of a mother of 5 girls attempting to marry them to wealthy husbands. It is said in this particular extract that 'a single wealthy man MUST be in search of a wife'. The extract shows that in this time it is the main part of a women's life to find a husband and it would be mainly by choice of the mother to whom this man would be. In this text Mrs Bennet states that 'It is likely that Mr Bennet may fall in love with one of her girls' so to say that yes a single man of good fortune may fall in love with one of the five daughters but what if they did not love this man back. It was a very pressuring decision to object to a marriage proposal especially if there was no male heir that would take care of the girls and inherit the family fortune. Because of this, the mother of these girls 'Mrs Bennet' takes matters into her own hands and makes it her life's work to marry them out. There was even the case where it was not seen as wrong to marry a cousin, this was seen as a particularly easy option to protect their direct family members and keep the money in the family.
