--The Civilised Body-- Question: How does Elias's analysis of the "civilising process" cast doubt on the idea that the body is an exclusively biological entity?
The Civilised BodyIn this discussion we are going to examine what the "civilising process" is, how it leads to ones body becoming "civilised" and how this widens the divide between how we see the body as being part of society and as a purely biological entity. I will then attempt to examine how this new perception of the body fits in with our modern society and culture.

So, before we begin, let us look at how bodies were before the civilising process began. In medieval times, the body was seen as a chaotic and purely biological and natural entity. Medieval society was characterized by disease, violent and emotional outbursts and food shortages. There was very little that was conductive to the forming of beautiful bodies. The only bodily regimes in this period were taken up by Christians, namely in monasteries and nunneries, where the inhabitants would stick to a strict diet and exercise bodily control and discipline. However, with the enlightenment, the sociologist Norbert Elias (1897-1990) has suggested we became increasingly controlling and regulating of our bodily functions and processes. This started off with the formation of "court societies" which were predominantly made up of nobles and monarchy. The people close to the monarch were associated with power and decided to develop different ways of behaving to distance themselves from the "common folk". This involved the adoption of manners, especially at mealtimes and the regulation of emotion, violence and bodily fluids. People who exhibited these traits were seen as having lower status. However, soon the "common folk" picked up on these new ways of behaving and adopted them, this put pressure on the court societies to invent new ways of behaving and monitoring their bodies to keep the distance from the rest of society. Soon behaviour such as urinating in public and farting became associated with embarrassment and shame, even if they were so much as mentioned. This Elias's described as the civilising process.

    English 101 T/Th 10/14/08 Analysis of “Social Bodies” Mrs. Deborah A. Sullivan is a well established author. She teaches at Arizona State University teaching sociology. She is the co-author of Labor Pains: Modern Midwives and Home Birth. She also has written a book of her own; Cosmetic Surgery: The Cutting Edge of Commercial Medicine in America. The piece of writing that I have to Analyze and Critique is a passage out of her book The Cutting Edge. The first sentence of the passage is her thesis. Every culture has customs that prescribe deliberately changing a body’s natural appearance. I believe that Mrs. Deborah A. Sullivan is correct in her beliefs, as well as her findings. Adults have the right to do what they choose to their bodies. Whether that is surgery or a tattoo, we need to respect that they can make decisions for themselves. If they want a full body tattoo then let them have it. They can make their own decisions about their body. Some of society actually tries to set themselves apart from the rest. The punks or the Goths are the most profound of them all. They go out of the way to get every piece of their body pierced or tattooed just to be different. They dress in all black also to be different. I think they were the people who started it all. Nobody liked tattoos until people started to set themselves apart. It was actually looked down upon until the 1980’s. My beliefs are the same as Mrs. Deborah Sullivan’s. I think people get tattoos and piercings just to fit in or actually to set themselves apart.     Grosz looks at ancient philosophical writers such as Plato, Aristotle and Descartes that evidently emphasize ‘ideals based on sexual binaries and hierarchies’ (47). ).
