Describe 4 factors, 2 external, which impact on the employment relationship.

A number of factors impact on the relationship between employees and employers. Below I have listed intenal and external factors which impact on the employment relationship.

Internal

Organisation culture – The behaviour and morals of the employees within the company have a big impact on the employment relationship e.g if there is the ethos of flexible working hours then you may find that the employees are more likely yo be unhappy towards any changed in the terms and conditions of their employment when it comes to their working hours.

Pay, Rewards & Benefits – This attracts, inactivates and retains employees. The employment contract which states employees rewards, pay, bonus and benefits can remove animosity amoungst both employees and employers.

Management willingness to tackle matters in a systematic and careful manner

The way in which employees conduct themselves e.g in a rofessional manner

Situation of the company in the market i.e sales increasing/decreasing

External

Technology – Improvements to existing systems/technology can result in redundancies and reduced hours in tuen this can affect the remaining employees who may feel demotivated and worries about their own job security. Employees at times can use this to their advantage by developing new skills and training in different areas to ensure they are more versitle.

Legal policies of governments - Government can pass laws that restrict the activities of trade unions thus limiting employees bargaining power.

Policies that are directed towards the creation of full employment maximise

An employer that does not like the way negotiations are going with employees can threaten to just close the company, or relocate it. This gives the employer incredible leverage in negotiations. The ability to strike gives employees a threat of almost equal power (strikes are generally temporary). The more power employers have over employees, the more lopsided…

Finally, there is also the argument that labor unions get in the way of business. They send too much time negotiating for things that don't really matter and halting the flow of the company. Business can't get anything done if unions refuse to cooperate with them. This can be said about almost all things in government. No system acts perfectly and its impossible to make everyone agree.…

My first developmental need is to gain a professional qualification within HR. I have proven to be a thinking performer and am in need of formal qualifications to enhance and strengthen my knowledge, skills and performance within the workplace, in order to satisfy this development need I have enrolled on this CIPD Level 5 certificate in HRM, I also take much pride in reading publications both online and in magazines such as People Management and UCEA updates and following changes within Employment law such as the recent change to pension auto-enrolment. I prefer to take a hands on approach and be involved whenever possible with new projects within the organisation, it is also very important to ensure this is reviewed regularly to ensure I am staying on track. As noted in page 124 of Studying Human Resource Management “CPD is not a one-off activity; it is a lifelong commitment to continually improving your knowledge and skills”…
