Cinematic Techniques In The Power Of One
The Power of One directed by John G. Avildsen cinematic techniques are used to make the audience empathise with particular characters. For example bildungrosman, camera angles, sound, and symbolism are key techniques used throughout the film
Bildungrosman is used throughout the course of the film. It helps the viewer feel a part of PKs life from childhood to adulthood. It shows all the highlights and lowlights in PKs life. An example of this is as a child PK was constantly losing friends and family and being brutally abused for being English boy in South Africa during the apartheid; to helping to bring African tribes together and meeting some very influential people that help P.K. to complete this.
Camera angles are used throughout the film The Power of One. This technique is majorly used throughout the whole film as it helps the audience feel a part of the film and can make the audience feel different emotions toward the particular character or scene of the film. For example when PK was little he had to attend an Afrikaner boarding school when he was an english boy. When the camera zoomed into P.K.’s face you could tell that he was petrified to be there as he did not belong. This technique helps the

Sound helps change the mood of the audience. For example when PK was running through the town of Alexandra to meet Gideon Dumar and the little kids were following an upbeat and joyful song was playing to show the audience that everything was okay and nothing terrible would happen. Another example of this is when PK is a little child he has lost both his mother and his father as they have both passed away and his chicken murdered. PKs nanny who was also very close to him had left him and he was standing all alone at his house a very distressing and depressing song was playing to help show how PK felt about this all.     Sound is a cinematic technique that is used to display true characters. Specifically, there is a diegetic sound of Willy Wonka’s tune when the winners first arrive to the factory. The winners of the golden tickets, are greeted by Wonka’s very cheerful, colorful, and hyper song. The song being played shows how excited and ecstatic Wonka can be. The costumes, characters, and sets are important to create an accurate setting, but the background music is also crucial. In scary movies, such as Jaws, the music is a key factor in inspiring the horrific feel. The iconic theme from Jaws that everyone has heard evokes fear in the minds of the viewers with dissonant chords. In a study conducted by Daniel Blumstein, the “irregular minor chords trigger the same instinctual response [a mother animal] feels when her babies are threatened” (Why is Scary Music Scary). Also, the music can emphasize character’s moods and thoughts.     The novel traces the adventures of Peekay, an English-speaking South African boy, from age five to age seventeen, from the year 1939 to 1951. After his mother suffers from a nervous breakdown, the five-year-old Peekay is brought up by his Zulu nanny Mary Mandoma and his Granpa on a farm in the province of Natal. Soon after, he is sent to an Afrikaans boarding school, where--as the youngest of all the students, and the only English-speaker--he is brutally tortured by the other boys.
