Cinco De Mayo Independence Day
Is Cinco de Mayo really the Mexican Independence Day? While most people mistake Cinco de Mayo for the day that Mexico gained their independence, Cinco de Mayo- the fifth of May- is actually celebrated because on that day the Mexican army claimed a victory over the French army in 1862 at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. Mexico actually gained their independence on September 16, 1810, 50 years before the Battle of Puebla occurred. The Franco-Mexican War began in late 1861; which was an invasion of Mexico by the Second French Empire. In 1861, Benito Juárez became president of Mexico. The country was in financial trouble and he was forced to put his debts on Spain, France, and Britain’s governments. Because of this, the countries sent naval forces to demand a reimbursement. Both Britain and Spain negotiated with Mexico, but France decided to take …show more content…
Going into the war, the Mexican army didn’t stand a chance. Unlike the French army, the Mexican army had very little men compared to the French and they were poorly supplied with armory. At the beginning of the battle, the odds were against the Mexican army, but they persevered and came out on top with a victory. This special victory allows people to celebrate on this day because it shows that even though the Mexicans were greatly outnumbered, they still won. It also allows people to show great pride of their country. The victory shows people that anything can happen and if you set your mind to it and work as a team, you can do anything. The odds were against the Mexicans, but yet, they still came out on top. Finally, Cinco de Mayo provides an outlet for working people. Cinco de Mayo is a day to celebrate. This day allows people with jobs to not go into work or get off early and be with their families.     July 4, 1776 is the day the American colonies declared their independence from the British Empire. There were thirteen colonies at the time. It all began when Great Britain kept on trying to make the colonists follow more rules and pay higher taxes. Unfair taxes created a lot of anger among the American colonists. When Britain continued to tax, the colonies formed the First Continental Congress to persuade the British government to recognize their rights. When this didn’t work a war was declared, which is known as the American Revolution. In fact, one act of protest became so famous it’s known as the “Boston Tea Party”, which took place in 1773. Basically, a group of colonists threw tea from the British East India Company into the water of Boston Harbor. This was one act of the American Revolution. The Declaration of Independence was drafted by John Adams, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman. All thirteen colonies stood behind the Declaration of Independence and adopted it in full on July 4, 1776. A second Continental Congress was formed. France supported the American Revolution and we won the war with help from the French. The Congress appointed a committee to write a document that would tell Great Britain that the Americans had decided to govern themselves. On July 4th the Congress approved the declaration. The 13 colonies were no longer part of the British Empire and had become independent states.
