Superman and me by Sheramn Alexie is about a little Indain boy who fell in love with reading after seeing his dad read so many books. This little boy taught him self how to read from a superman comic book and advanced quickly. The article says the Indian people expect the indian kids to fail in a non-indian world. But the indian boy says that he's smart, arrogant and lucky. He was determined not to fail like everyone expected him to, because his parents lived by pay-check and he wanted more in life for his self. He read everything from magazines to manuals anytime he got the chance to read. He eventually became a writer even though he expected to become a pediatrician. He mostly wrote poems and short stories. He also went back and taught indian kids how to read and write so they can also have the oppurtunity to be something better in life rather than fail like they are expected to.

I can relate to this article bacause the little indian boy's parents didn't have much but they worked hard to make thier children's future a little better, and the indian boy saw this and didn't want to be a failure with a average job. Like the indian boy I dont to fial in life because my mom works very hard and she expects me to stay in school and get to highest level possible so my life will be a little easier. Many of the points made in this chapter can be related to this assignment. The way the indian boy described the pargraphs as "a fence that held words" and "the words inside the paragraph worked together for a common purpose" they had some specific reason for being in the same fence. All the things he observed are true, because a paragraph was a section of a piece of writing, usually dealing with a sinlge theme and indicated by a new line, indention or numbering. This applies to our assignment because we are writing paragraphs and each paragraph has a specific topic that has to be written about or explained about the

My initial impression is that this story is about a kid discussing his comic books due to the introduction. How I thought to myself that this was a biography about guy name Sherman. Him explaining how he reads books at a very young age while other couldn’t. The author conveys that Sherman picked up a book before he could even read, So I thought that this was going to be about a guy who prefers books over social life. However, as I continued to read Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie it gives me imagination. Within that scenery, I saw Sherman’s thoughts and emotions.…

“Superman and Me” is a brief overview of Sherman Alexie’s path in becoming a writer. Born on an Indian reservation with little to no money and three siblings, Sherman Alexie was not provided a bright future. He was expected to be un-sophisticated and un-social in school because that was the general discernment of Native Americans at that time. Alexie’s “Superman and Me” is indirectly intended for that same audience: the kids, on Indian Reservations, that are struggling in school and life in general and think all hope is lost. Sherman explains, “Then there are the sullen and already defeated Indian kids who sit in the back rows and ignore me with theatrical precision…’Books,’ I say to them. ‘Books,’ I say. I throw my weight against their locked doors. The door holds. I am smart. I am arrogant. I am lucky. I am trying to save our lives.” As you read deeper and deeper into this story, it is easy to realize a clear purpose in this piece. Sherman Alexie’s “Superman and Me” uses rhetorical strategies to present the argument that by reading he can become an model for Indians on reservation and fight the stereotypes associated with Native Americans.…

In the essay “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me,” Sherman Alexie credits learning to read a Superman comic book with saving his life. As an Indian boy growing up on a reservation in Spokane, Washington, where being uneducated was not the exception but the rule, Alexie was given few opportunities to succeed. The Superman comic book was the book he taught himself to read with, which in turn saved him from going down a path that lead to a the life of inferiority and failure. Learning to read gave him the confidence to break down a door that had previously prevented Indians from succeeding as well as the driving force that allowed him to persevere against the adversity he faced. The significance of Superman is carried on throughout the essay, not only with the comic book being what taught him how to read but also what its content represented. He illustrates this concept through metaphors and comparisons between himself and Superman, while captivating the reader through his depiction of what it was like for him growing up on an Indian reservation where the expectation given by Indians and non-Indians alike was to fit into the social norm of being unsophisticated and therefore unsuccessful. The Superman comic book was both the catalyst in teaching Alexie how to read and the inspiration to teach others.…
