Christopher Columbus: Hero Or Villain?
In the year of 1451, there was the birth of a man named Christopher Columbus, the son of a wool merchant. During Columbus early years he was known for sailing around the continent in hopes of finding the new world, but, later on he became known as an evil person. At the end of the 14th century, Christopher Columbus and the Europeans began their search for a direct route to Asia. The Portuguese main focus was to set sail east and south around Africa, however, Christopher Columbus believed he could sail west and help the queen and king sail directly to Asia. Columbus sailed toward Spain but, instead of finding his intended route to Asia he discovers a new land that has for reaching consequences. Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the new land

Columbus went to the island of Antilles where he encountered another group of Native Americans known as the Tainos. When he arrived on the island, the Indians peacefully welcomed him in but the torture he ordered was devastating. On his second voyage Columbus went there to conquer their land and search for gold, but consequently, his actions to get what he wanted was very horrifying. Beside, enslavement, torture, and murder of the native people, Columbus also, raped women and killed children. He would even send dogs to torture and kill the Indians. Christopher Columbus men no longer like the acts of torture and they began to refuse his orders. Many of the Indians population were wiped out besides the ones that were captured. If they would try to escape Columbus would have them captured and have their heads, or body parts cut off. The many different forms of torture Christopher Columbus put upon all of the native people in my opinion would put him in the category of a …show more content…
Columbus went on a voyage that was funded by the queen and king, and all threw this voyage he was peaceful not ordering his men to inflict slavery and torture of the natives. Columbus intentions were to go find an island that had the goods that he was looking for such as gold. Upon his arrival on this island he notices the natives did have gold. The Tainos gave Columbus the gold and he then took it back with him and went on a second voyage. On the second voyage he brought a crew with him which he ordered that crew to do horrible things to the Tainos making him a cruel and ruthless person. In conclusion, I believe that Christopher Columbus used his power to be a cruel and evil person. Although, it has been viewed all through history that the discovery of the new land made him a hero, I disagree. In my opinion, if his actions of brutality and torture of the horrible things he did to the Tainos on their island I don’t believe we should have a day off celebrating Christopher Columbus. I give him credit for his journey but, he should have been punished more severe for the horrible things that he
