Christopher Columbus good or bad?
Is Christopher Columbus hero or villain?

Christopher Columbus was born on 31 October 1451. He lived in an impoverished childhood. During his childhood, he studied geography and developed skills for sailing, which he loved. When he became cartographer, Queen Isabella help him to set sail. Christopher Columbus arrived at the island called Bahamas (which is very close to America) on 12 October 1492. Christopher Columbus is known to be “the founder” of America and many Americans think him as a hero because he motivated people in Europe to visit America. However Christopher Columbus does not fit the title of hero since he has committed number of sins.

Back in 14 Century, people believed that Earth was flat and at the edge of Earth, everything will fall down. This is the reason why people in Europe could not dare to sail farther than Asia. However when Christopher Columbus became a cartographer, he believed that Earth was round. Also Marco Polo who had traveled to China and India and brought the spices to Europe and inspired him. He wanted to find a shortcut to reach India more quickly. Christopher Columbus wanted to prove that he is right and wanted to set sail as fast as he can. He asked kings and queens to give him the permission and lend him some help. However Christopher wasted his five years until Queen Isabella gave him permission and three ships: Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria, and about hundred men to follow him. On August third 1496, he set sail to sea. Men in the ship started to get scared because the voyage was taking more than what Christopher Columbus thought. Despite Columbus’s men in depression, they finally arrived at the island called Bahamas on October 12, 1492. Columbus thought that the land was India. He sailed back to Europe with the gold and rich jewelry from the land he found.

When Columbus arrived at Spain, many people were surprised because his voyage proved that the world is round. Also when people saw what Columbus had brought from the land that he found, many sailors decided to sail down to the Bahamas. The rich jewelry had motivated people to visit America. More and more people started to settle down at America and the land was getting crowded. Christopher Columbus was very brave, skilled boatman and he had tenacity. Even if he thought that the world is round, without his tenacity, he could have not gotten the permission from Queen Isabella. Also he could have given up during the sail because the voyage took more than what Christopher he thought. Then America could have not found until other man found it.

Although Christopher Columbus has played an important role to motivate and raise the awareness to people in Europe to visit America, he was a cruel man. In 14 Century in Europe, slavery was legal and the slave trade was very lucrative. In his second voyage to America, Queen Isabella told him to treat the native people kindly. In opposition of Queen’s order, Columbus began to export slaves in a great number. When the slaves arrived at Spain, about third of slaves had died. When the sailors were going back to Europe, they did not have to use the compass or other equipment to find their ways. They simply followed the floating dead body of Indians who had been tossed overboard when they died. Columbus had made the native people slaves and so many slaves were export to Spain, people have to force him to stop the slave exporting. However the slavery was not finished. The slaves that were not exported were put in the slavery in the island. Christopher Columbus let the settlers choose which slaves they wanted and bought. Columbus has made the native men to work and he sold many women as the sex slaves.

Slavery was not the only thing that Christopher Columbus was brutal about. He was torturing and killing the native people. He had murdered thousands of native people because of gold. Many native people decided to kill their children and commit suicide because Columbus was devilish and they thought that death is better than living in a live of slave. The one thing that Columbus was mad about was gold. He sent his men and native people to search for the gold. The chief of native people said that European would cut their stomach even if they swallowed their “god.” The “god” refers to the gold. The native people decided to threw gold in the river so Columbus could not find it.

Christopher Columbus wanted the native people to change their religion to Christian. At one point of time, Columbus have sent five hundreds of his men into the hill to search for gold. Upon the hill, native people were prepared to attack them and there was a big fight. When Columbus heard this news, he sent another four hundreds men who were armed, to show how strong he was. He thought that he would not lose because he is Christian and the Christian will never lose to the person who does not believe the same god. He believed that god will only punish the non-Christian people and he will be forgiven. At the end of the battle, thousands of native people had died and Columbus had punished the survivors.

The other sins that were committed by Columbus were informed by one of his sailor called Michele de Cuneo. According to him one slave was trying to escape from the ship. Unfortunately, that slave was caught and Columbus chopped off the slave’s head with an axe and threw the dead body into the ocean. Michele de Cuneo also described about the sex slaves. Columbus believed that there was nothing wrong with capturing the women for men. He believed that he does not need women’ consent. The native women could not understand the environment because they have not experience or heard about the raping.

Christopher Columbus was an innovator. He was braver than anyone in Europe. He sailed all the way down to America. However that does not make him a hero. The men who followed Columbus had cut the hands of the native people and tied it around their neck. They massacre the entire village, unconcerned about the sex or age. All of these actions are lead by the Christopher Columbus, so called hero because he is “the founder” of America. I think people have to learn and educated about the sins that he committed and the true nature of Christopher Columbus.

Many attribute Christopher Columbus with daring and ingenuity for having the initiative to sail into the unknown and discover North America. In reality, however, it was a mission doomed to failure. He ignored the (accurate) counsel of the top scientists of his day, insisting that his hypothesis that the world is round (true) was possible but if it was true then there would be an arc much larger than his calculations indicated between Europe’s west tip to the east of Asia, specifically India. Had he not stumbled upon North America, which he thought was India, (Hence Native Americans being referred to as Indians) his men would have mutinied or perished from dehydration or starvation. His folly led to an accidental discovery of a new continent, but was not based on his greatness. Rather, it was based on his ignorance and…

History has always been a topic that I personally have never thought could be wrong or false; it has always been something that I thought was unquestionable, but Hans Koning opened my eyes to the fact that we should always question history and explore things further. The stories told about Columbus are those of heroism and adventure, but Hans Koning explains in his book Columbus: His Enterprise that our beliefs on who Columbus was as a person are astray. Koning says that the story of Columbus is “Eurocentric” and told to glorify the European civilization of that time period; therefore, the most important argument that Koning makes in his book is that Columbus really was a selfish, and greedy con artist.…

Columbus has always been portrayed as an enlightened, peaceful explorer who “discovered” a new world, and became friends with the native people. Howard Zinn’s view on Columbus’s encounter with the natives is an entirely different perspective. Zinn describes Columbus as a man who is willing to torture and kill others to be able to accomplish what he wants; in this case he wanted to obtain gold and other resources to take back with him to Spain.…

Although during this era there were many explorers who attempted to connect both worlds by sailing the seas, such as the Portuguese’s own Prince Henry the Navigator, one of the best known explorers was Christopher Columbus. He was the man that accomplished bringing the Old and the New Worlds together. On the night of October 11, 1492, on board the Santa Maria in the Atlantic Ocean, he saw a light in the far distance that was thought to be the costal islands of Eastern India but were later found to be the Bahamas. “The connection between the Old and New Worlds, which for more than ten millennia had been no more than a tenuous thing of Viking voyages, drifting fisherman, and shadowy contacts via Polynesia…” At first the Europeans thought they were just off the coast of Asia, but were soon to be in awe of the flora and fauna of the land they had encountered. “I saw neither sheep nor goats nor any other beast,…

In conclusion, my thoughts from my childhood about Columbus has changed and I see him differently now, not as a hero, but as someone who wanted too much power and glory, which got in the way of his humanity. If he had been more civil towards the Natives and his own people and didn't attempt to take all the glory for himself, maybe he would be seen as a hero instead of a…

Beginning in the 1600s, one of the main concepts for England, France, and Spain at the time was mercantilism. These were the three most powerful and blooming countries at the time. Starting from the earliest years as the late 1500s, and continuing on, all three countries were soon to battle for claim of the new land. Only one country could triumph. Despite success, even the strongest can become the weakest.…

Authors Peter McDonald and Lynn Anderson said, “Where the greatest need for re-education is apparent, is in understanding that the brutal vision of conquest which Columbus ushered in so long ago continues unabated to this day.” Columbus did not discover America as so many of us have been led to believe. The definition of discover is “to see, get knowledge of, learn of, find or find out; gain sight or knowledge of something previously unseen or unknown” (Random 563). Textbooks generally disregard his many crimes committed against humanity by intentionally omitting them, simultaneously magnifying his role as a great navigator. They glorify him and humanize him to induce…

After reading Howard Zinn’s viewpoint on Columbus, the Indians, and the human progress I can now confirm/characterize that Columbus is, as historical figure, not a hero, but somewhere in between being a hero and a villain (being more towards a villain). Throughout the whole reading the reader can notice how Colombus’ mistake of finding a new route to Asia and mistakenly discovering an unknown land to the Europeans caused great pain for the natives who were forced into labor/made into slaves to go find and bring Colombus gold, so he can give it to Spain for them to send more ships to Columbus to get more gold for the country’s wealth, and when they couldn’t find any they would be killed. Colombus’ discovery led to many deaths and the Europeans…

Christopher Columbus is a man who is known in society simultaneously as a hero and a villain of his time. What if the world had to pick only one, what would it be? Many new studies and scholars believe that Columbus was the villain of his story not a hero as past information would lead us to believe. Past documents were all written from Europe’s point of view, this lead to extremely biased documents because Europe was the side to profit unlike the Native Americans. Columbus was the antagonist of the new world due to how he forced the natives into slavery, he raped and robbed the natives he found, and how he slaughtered the natives if they could not collect enough gold.…

Christopher Columbus can in no way, shape, or form be considered a hero. A hero is someone who performs good deeds for the sake of others and not for their own benefit. Christopher Columbus did not do a single good deed in any of his four voyages in the late 1400 's. Christopher Columbus was not the founder of the Americas we live in today because he did not set a single foot on these grounds, even if he did there were already the natives who inhabited the land. When he first sited land it was further down south in the Caribbean Islands. Christopher Columbus can be considered the enforcer of slavery. Slavery was already going on when he left Spain. However, the natives could be used for trade with other goods, this was known as the slave trade. He and his crew basically enslaved a whole race of men, women, and children. When Christopher Columbus discovered what he thought to be the "New World", he had no idea that he would find a whole race of people. His intensions were to go out and find gold and spices to bring back to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in Spain.…
