Christopher Columbus Course Analysis
Everything that has been taught to us before this course is a lie. At least that would be what I would say if you asked me to describe what I learned in this course in one sentence. Throughout this course, I was exposed to background knowledge of historical events and figures that I hadn’t learned before. I learned everything from the truth behind the discovery of the new world, to the way our textbooks are created, to the real horrors of the holocaust, and even to the truth behind the reason our wars. I learned that behind the reason’s that the U.S claim to be for going to war, there are other REAL reasons for it. Reasons that are filled with greed and don’t benefit anyone but those who are in power. The history that I learned in this course, wasn’t the exact depiction of the one I had learned before. Actually, it wasn’t even close to being like it.
During this course, I found out that many of our historical figures weren’t what they were portrayed to be. First of all, Columbus wasn’t even the first person to discover America. There was in fact other explorers that had discovered the new world, but unlike Columbus didn’t claim it. Columbus also wasn’t as

I didn’t know much about this era, other than women, colored people, and workers were fighting for their rights. There were some changes that came from this era, changes that helped shape the way our society works today. For example, the minimum wage was set in this era. As was the paid vacation and the 8-hour work day. Thanks for the progressives’ fighting and perseverance there were rules that were set to help the working class (Discussion Board 9). I always thought that minimum wage was just something the government came up with as soon as jobs existed. But little did I know that the truth behind it is that people had to fight enough to earn minimum wage. That is something that will be permanently tattooed in my

I am summarizing the first sub-division of chapter one, pages 1 through 7. The chapter begins talking about Christopher Columbus and how he was on the hunt for gold, so much so that he convinced the king and queen of Spain to finance an expedition for him promising to return with gold and spices from newly discovered land. However, during the voyage there, he stumbled upon The Americas where he then met the Arawak men and women, and the chapter then proceeds to explain their first encounters with Cristopher Columbus. When Columbus arrived he was greeted kindly with food, water, gifts and with amazing hospitality. Though he was greeted pleasantly one of the first things Columbus did was force the natives on ship with him, insisting they lead…

In 1492, Christopher Columbus, discovered America. More than 500 years later Columbus Day is a national holiday. Statues are up, even in Pueblo, and thanks are given for what he has done for us. We learn about him in grade school and we are told of his brave adventures. However twenty years later in my first history class another picture is being painted of Columbus; not from my History book, but from my teacher. I thought it was interesting to be learning these conflicting views of him and researched the facts. Apparently a lot of people feel the same way…Christopher Columbus was a villain. Nearly 500 years ago Christopher Columbus…

Part I: After reading chapters 2 and 3 in Lies My Teacher Told Me by James Loewen, which gave a new view on Christopher Columbus and the first thanksgiving. One concept that Loewen wrote about and Dr. J lectured about was that Christopher Columbus wasn't actually the first one to “discover” the “New World”. In fact many people had been living there for sometime before he had arrived. They gave Columbus a sense of herofication which is "a degenerative process (much like calcification) that makes people over into heroes. Through this process, our educational media turn flesh-and-blood individuals into pious, perfect creatures without conflicts, pain, credibility, or human interest” (Loewen 11). The history books didn't exactly tell the truth nor lie, they just filled in with the wrong information and unverifiable information. Loewen also wrote about how “the textbooks first mistake is to underplay previous explorers. People from other continents had reached the Americas many times before 1942”…

Nowadays, no matter what narrative history takes, it always contains the same opening with same characters: “Its narrative, too, can start with that man sailing on his shops for days and days, for that man sailing on his ships for days and days is the source of many narratives” (623). By stating “its narrative, too, can start with a man” displays how such generalized styles with the unchanged figures accomplishing the identical achievements are being “the source of many narratives” (623). She is even no longer “living in the place where I and those who look like [her] first made an appearance,” living “in another place” and having “another narrative,” but is still experiencing the same version of history (623). This ironic situation justifies Kincaid’s confusion and undoubtedly critiques the people’s overgeneralized and somewhat ignorant attitude towards history. They have never actually considered understanding thoroughly the history of her people, but only considered the surface of it and believed that to be the entire story. Thus she is confused with the definition of history. For instance, so called “experts” claim that history starts on the year “fourteen hundred and ninety-two,” when Columbus finds the land (623). What is so important about Columbus that he appears throughout most of histories but not the minorities or the people like Kincaid? Although Kincaid wants to call her past as part of history, she is hindered by the majority because she and her people are not the key roles of…

There were a ton of majors that looked interesting from this lecture. First off the animal sciences major looked very appealing since I love working with animals and would like to understand more about them. The major seems very hands on and adventurous. The major fits in with my strengths since I’m passionate in science related topics. Another major that appeals to me is the agribusiness and applied economics, as this was one of the recommended majors from the survey that was taken during the lecture. It combines many of the aspects that I enjoy, including working with numbers and the principles of economics.…

Life was hard for a lot of people in the progressive era for workers. Employers would pay a lot of the workers a very little amount of money. For instance if you were a female and worked in the shirtwaist factory, you were paid $2 a day. If you messed up your boss would take it out of your pay. Also the material you used was bought with your money so you would really be getting $1.50 instead of $2. If you worked in the shirtwaist factory there was one way in and out of the building to make sure you don't steal anything from the factory. If you didn't like the way you had to work you would get fired because there are hundreds of immigrants that want a job just because they want to achieve the american dream and they don't care how much the get…

This course has given me insight to American History that I hadn't known before. One topic I knew some information about, but didn’t really understand was the subject of World War I. Prior to taking this course, I knew the basics of the War; what countries fought in it, when it was fought, and that was about it. I didn’t know the reason why it was fought, or who was the president, or what was going on in America and the rest of the world during it. By taking this course, I learned the information I hadn’t known about the war. For example, I learned that the president during the war was Woodrow Wilson, and the reason the United States got involved was because Germans repeatedly sank U.S. ships. Thanks to this course, I was able to tie the facts that I had previously known about World War I to the new facts that I learned for a better understanding of the…

The Progressive Era was a twenty year period, between 1900 and 1920, of much change in the U.S. Many Americans would begin to stand up for what they believed was right. This would lead to a number of reforms to help improve American life. Laws passed under Presidents Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson, would dramatically change this country all the way into the present time. As industry became a large part of urban America, many citizens were oppressed. Unfair and unsanitary conditions would lead to multiple reforms concerning the actions of large corporations. Along with businesses’ unfair treatment of workers, was the ongoing mistreatment of African Americans. Eventually, by the end of the Era many laws were passed to end the corruption that was beginning to form.…

The late 1800’s and early 1900’s was called the Progressive Era. Society became more diverse while industry flourished. After reading the First Letter to Luis de Santangel and the Letter to Ferdinand and Isabella regarding the fourth voyage, I have compared the two letters. They seem to be written by different people because of the change of environments. The First Letter to Luis de Santangel was written on February 17, 1493. Ten years later, July 7, 1503, the Letter to Ferdinand and Isabella was composed. Within this ten year gap, so much turmoil was caused by Christopher Columbus's discoveries. His curiosity led him to discover so much of what the world has to offer.…

Over the years, Christopher Columbus has been a person whose accomplishments and cruelties have led many into constant questioning of his current image. As children, we are led to believe that Columbus was a great explorer, who discovered the Americas and allowed for both worlds to unite. As we grow up, however, we learn more about him and some of his cruel deeds. This twists our perception of Columbus and makes us wonder, how should we remember Columbus? As all the pieces come together, we realize Columbus should be remembered by how our textbooks put him, as a man of one great success and many failures.…

The Progressive Era was a time of huge advances and reform by the federal government and reformers that led the way to where America is today. The battle for women’s rights had been going on for many years but seriously picked up wind during this time period and finally reached some long sought after goals. With industry booming, labor conditions were in desperate need of change and caught the eye of both reformers and the federal government. Even though much time had passed since the Civil War, race relations were still strained and many African-Americans joined the crusade for equal rights and made it a major issue of the time. During the Progressive Era, reformers made many advances in women’s rights, labor conditions, race relations, and big business and trusts but faced challenging limitations on the way to their goals, and therefore turned to the federal government, who although effective in many reforms also failed in certain areas.…

The progressive Era was a time of confusion as well as success. The Progressive Era, which lasted from the 1890s to the 1920s, was an age of reform, the nation’s response to the industrial revolution. Its effects touched virtually all Americans and transformed the role of government in American society. Although some areas of American life, namely, racial issues and women's rights, were neglected during the progressive age, the groundwork was laid for future reforms in those areas and others.…

Progressive Era was new era that, American’s have never experienced before but was the start to fixing social, economical and other problems that country was facing. In Eugene v.
