We are surrounded by tradition in our lives, whether we take the time to notice it or not. Christmas is a religious tradition, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in elementary schools is a centripetal national tradition, and visiting a particular place every year may be a family’s tradition. No matter what we do, or where we go, there will almost always be some form of tradition around. So, why should we get rid of any type of tradition? Tradition can be proved to be evidently essential today based on remembering important dates and events, culture lasting through generations, and bringing families closer together.…

“It could remind you that you were a useless, orphaned spastic.” (Page 56). This statement of Johnsey Cunliffe shows his very poor sense of himself, which occurs very often throughout Donal Ryan’s novel “The Thing About December”. Within my paper I want to discuss how the narrative situation in the novel influences our perception of Johnsey’s character and if we should see him in the way he does see himself. Furthermore, I want to think about why the author chose this particular way to tell the story.…

As I slowly awaken from a deep sleep, cool air hits my squinting eyes and I have the feeling that this is not a normal day. I close my eyes again and ponder for less than a spilt second then realize that SANTA CAME LAST NIGHT!!! I throw back the covers, ignoring the cold that would have kept me in bed for hours later on a normal day, and run to the Christmas tree. Without any lights on I quietly examine everything placed under the tree. I notice that Santa had eaten my cookies and drank all my milk. This made me feel as if I had accomplished something more important than world peace; I had fed Santa. All my unwrapped gifts that had appeared only overnight had a special aura surrounding them. Something magical. With a perpetual smile I sit and enjoy the look of the tree and all my new things. I pick up the new stuffed horse first, because horses are my favorite, and rub its soft synthetic brown fur. After I going through all of the good stuff, ignoring the sets of clothes and underwear, I traipse back to Mama and Daddy's room to assure them that Santa had come that night and brought me everything that I wanted.…

Joyous feelings, family and religious traditions can be overshadowed by stress, fatigue and gloom--"the blues." In addition to all of the gifts, goodies, decorations and events, the holiday season can be filled with many pressures. To reduce a stressful holiday, people should look at the simple ways that are all around them.…

Christmas has been with us for a very long time, but NOT as long as some think. Many mistakenly believe that the Christian churches have been celebrating Christmas since the church started on the Day of Pentecost. The truth is, for the first 400 - 500 years of Christianity there is no mention made of a celebration centering around the "birth" of Jesus. The early church DID NOT observe what we know today as Christmas. It wasn't until well into the 4th century that some (NOT ALL) professing Christians started observing Christmas in one form or another. Over the years Christmas was polished over and over to become one of the brightest stones in Christian "theology".…
