Holiday Research Project Christmas in Spain Many countries celebrate their holidays in many different ways compared to us. What they do may be weird or out of the normal to us. But, what they do are their traditions, and what we do are our traditions. So, it’s not weird or out of the normal it’s just different. That’s what I thought the first time I read about this country. My partner Andrea and I chose the holiday Christmas and the country Spain. In Spain many people celebrate the holiday Christmas but the Christians and Catholics of this country are the ones who celebrate it the most. To some it is a religious holiday to others it is not, but in Spain it is more of a cultural holiday. They celebrate this holiday from Dec. 24th – Jan. 6th. We chose this holiday mostly because we like Christmas, but we also thought it would be fun. Well the whole holiday started because over 2,000 years ago a couple named Mary and Joseph were going to get married, and an angel came to Mary in a dream saying, “Behold you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.” Well, in those times a woman was supposed to be married before giving birth to a child, but the people of Nazareth didn’t understand that she was still a virgin. So Mary and Joseph left, otherwise they would have been stoned to death. So, one night they started for Bethlehem. When they got to Bethlehem they were tired so they went to look for somewhere to stay, but when they got to the inn it was booked, but thankfully the innkeeper offered them to stay in his manger, they went because Mary knew she would be giving birth soon. While they were there Mary did give birth to Baby Jesus. Prior to Baby Jesus being born an angel came upon Three Wise Kings and told them to follow the North Star for a new king was to be born. They brought Baby Jesus gifts of Frankincense, gold, and Myrrh. So, this holiday as you can see is

Christmas is celebrated by many people. We can celebrate it by having family gatherings, have fellowship by food, exchanging gifts, and letting people know how grateful we are for them. Some other people think of Christmas as a very religious time of year, when the prophecy of Jesus Christ coming back and being born was fulfilled. A prophecy is a prediction that you think will come true. Jesus fulfilled many prophecies that were predicted in the old testament.…

Colonial Christmas was a holiday for adults, not a magical day for children. Christmas celebrations originated in the southern colonies, and activities included parties, hunts, feasts, and church services, all of which were adult activities. We do get some of our traditions from colonial days. For instance, the main decorations were holly, laurel, and garland, because these were the only plants that looked good during the middle of winter. Mistletoe was hung prominently, and couples would find their way under it at the Christmas balls.…

Hey Virginia, there is more than just a Santa Claus. Nowadays, Americans have either forgotten or ignored Christmas traditions put in place over 1500 years ago. They would rather indulge in the gifts and shopping to please their family than sit back and enjoy the holiday. This new mindset has led Christmas, Hanukkah, and other seasonal festivals to lose their religious intent through the past centuries by the hands of both people and markets. The original purpose of Christmas, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, has been trampled and overshadowed by a marketeer’s interpretation of how to represent the holiday. Santa and snowmen have become the faces of Christmas, instead of the Son…

There are many similarities and differences between the christmas customs in Spain and christmas in the U.S.. One similarity, is that both involve the gathering of families and friends. Another is the preparing of big meals in Christmas Eve and the many cheerful decorations put up. Both countries also celebrate New Years too. A difference between christmas in Spain and Christmas in the U.S. is that while children in America usually get their gifts on the 24th of December. In Spain, gifts are given on the 6th of January because of Los Reyes Magos, where three kings traveled bringing presents to baby Jesus. “Christmas” by Floyd Dell and “Christmas Time on the Frontier,” are both stories that tell of poor families on Christmas day. In “Christmas,“ the mom and dad never told their son they were poor. The son donated money to poor people at Sunday school, not knowing that he and his family were one of those “poor people” that people wanted to donate money to. He figured out towards the end that him and his family were poor, when he put all the pieces in his head together (why they only ate potato soup, avoided talking about Christmas entirely, mother was too ashamed to write name on donation envelope, etc.), which…

Christmas wasn’t always the popular holiday it is today. In fact, the well known puritans, in the 1600s actually banned it out of disgust and anger. Christmas nowadays is heralded, by most, as a joyous holiday. Those who don’t celebrate Christmas, but celebrate a different holiday around this time are still consumed by the beauty of the wintery season. However, some Americans do not celebrate Christmas- or any holidays for that matter and in fact look down on them as useless and frivolous in a Scrooge-like manner. It is perhaps from the puritans that this intolerance of holidays stems, just as the joy from Christmas comes from The Christmas Carol, by Dickens and religion. The Ban on Christmas in 17th century Puritan New England shaped the attitudes towards the…

The War on Christmas refers specifically to the controversy surrounding the celebration or acknowledgment of the Christmas holiday in government, media, advertising and other secular environments. Modern-day controversy occurs around the world, and stems from the holiday's significant annual role in celebrating cultural values in Western society. See The War on Christmas: How the Liberal Plot to Ban the Sacred Christian Holiday Is Worse Than You Thought. Fox News has been particularly vocal in the War on Christmas, trying to prevent secular censorship of Christmas celebration.[1] Bill O'Reilly had devoted numerous segments on his show in recent years to the War on Christmas.…

The holiday is especially popular in Mexico, where it is a national holiday. It is also celebrated in the Philippines, Mexican-American communities in the United States, and other Latin American countries (such as Ecuador, Guatemala and Bolivia). It is a public holiday in Brazil, where many people celebrate it by visiting cemeteries and churches, by bringing flowers and candles to put on altars, and praying. Some countries in Europe, such as Spain and Portugal, also recognize the holiday. While in these other countries, not all of the same traditions are practiced, the general idea is the same.…
