Christmas Carol Essay
The Christmas carol written by Charles Dickens has a wide range of characters to contrast each other. The author’s intention is clearly defined through the characters in the different classes of society. Shown through their personalities and how they feel about their lives differentiates the characters. Ebenezer scrooge as the main character has the personality of a grumpy man with a hatred for Christmas representing the inertia of the middle class. Fred scrooge’s nephew on the other hand is the total opposite to scrooge and is happy with a very positive personality. Bob Cratchit also has a positive personality but has the point of view of being part of the lower class. All these characters have differences and can contrast one another in different ways.
Ebenezer scrooge is an older man that is cold and bitter with a negative outlook on life. Scrooge is the character to represent the inertia of the middle class and how they felt about their money. Scrooge has fear struck to the bone during the story about becoming poor again which contributes to the type of personality scrooge and how dramatically it has changed over the years since he was a young man. Scrooge is a very solemn character who is also a character people laugh at during the novel as he has different emotions and actions. A light character that you can learn a lesson about how the middle class acted in that time. Scrooges journey is the biggest lesson of all about how you need to be open to change to end up being an open hearted person who is generous to people. Scrooges’ first reaction to Christmas is ‘humbug’ which means he thinks it’s rubbish and doesn’t want any part of it. By the end he couldn’t be happier that it’s Christmas and is jumping around like a young boy again. A lesson that made a big impact on scrooge showing that he has to change is done through the ghost of Christmas past and how he shows scrooge his childhood and what he used to be like.
