Christmas holiday

Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus. The English term Christmas (“mass on Christ’s day”) is of fairly recent origin. The earlier term Yule may have derived from the Germanic jōl or the Anglo-Saxon geōl, which referred to the feast of the winter solstice. The corresponding terms in other languages—Navidad in Spanish, Natale in Italian, Noël in French—all probably denote nativity. The German word Weihnachten denotes “hallowed night.” Since the early 20th century, Christmas has also been a secular family holiday, observed by Christians and non-Christians alike, devoid of Christian elements, and marked by an increasingly elaborate exchange of gifts. In this secular Christmas celebration, a mythical figure named Santa Claus plays the pivotal role.
The early Christian community distinguished between the identification of the date of Jesus’ birth and the liturgical celebration of that event. The actual observance of the day of Jesus’ birth was long in coming. In particular, during the first two centuries of Christianity there was strong opposition to recognizing birthdays of martyrs or, for that matter, of Jesus. Numerous church fathers offered sarcastic comments about the pagan custom of celebrating birthdays when, in fact, saints and martyrs should be honoured on the days of their martyrdom—their true “birthdays,” from the church’s perspective.
The precise origin of assigning December 25 as the birth date of Jesus is unclear. The New Testament provides no clues in this regard. December 25 was first identified as the date of Jesus’ birth by Sextus Julius Africanus in 221 and later became the universally accepted date. One widespread explanation of the origin of this date is that December 25 was the Christianizing of the dies solis invicti nati (“day of the birth of the unconquered sun”), a popular holiday in the Roman Empire that celebrated the winter solstice as a symbol of the resurgence of the sun, the casting away of winter and

The holiday Christmas has traditionally represented the birth of Jesus Christ. Christians worldwide have celebrated December 25 as their God’s birthday; however, Christians have held no historical significance to the holiday. Most customs involved in Christmas have originated from ancient pagan celebrations. The customs have dated back to events like Saturnalia and the Unconquered Sun, proving the ideas stemmed from pagan roots not Christian.…

Pagans and Christianity have been at each other for centuries. Paganism is a religion of nature. Pagans see the divine as a whole in life and universe. Pagans live according to the cycles of Nature, the seasons, life and death.[12] Christians believe that God created the universe. Believing Him as the Father Almighty, the son and the holy spirit.[7] Pagan Holidays, also known as Sabbats, occur during the Wheel of the Year. This represents the belief that life is eternal and constantly changing. Christian Holidays occur from the Roman calendar.[5] The dates of these two religions’ holidays are almost exact and this will be explained. Now, Christianity is not any better or worse than Paganism. Even though Christians got their holidays from Pagan Sabbats, we all have our own beliefs and celebrate in our own way.…

The main religious celebration among members of the Catholic Church and other Christian groups is the Church service on Christmas Eve or on the morning of Christmas Day. During the forty days leading up to Christmas, the Eastern Orthodox Church practices the Nativity Fast, while the majority of Christian congregations (including the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, many Mainline churches, and Baptists) begin observing the liturgical season of Advent four Sundays before Christmas—both are seen as times of spiritual cleansing, recollection and renewal to prepare for the celebration of the birth of Jesus.…

When we speak of Christians, we all know that this is a commonly known holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Believe it or not, I grew up in a Christian home where we did not celebrate Christmas. My parents believe that Christmas is a pagan holiday, Jesus was not born on December 25th, and that the bible doesn 't ask us to celebrate Jesus ' birthday. Well now that I 'm older, I 've decided to show pluralism to the Christians who celebrate Christmas. Therefore, even though I don 't believe in the celebration of Christmas; I still go to Christmas parties and respect those who do. On another note, my parents and I are not the only Christians who choose not to celebrate Christmas, there are others. Along with Jehovah witness, some Muslims, Indians, and of course Jews whom celebrate Hanukkah.…

Rather, he told his disciples to memorialize, or remember, his death. (Luke 22:19, 20) Christmas and its customs come from ancient false religions. The only two birthday celebrations spoken of in the Bible were held by persons who did not worship Jehovah. (Genesis 40:20-22; Mark 6:21, 22, 24-27) The early Christians did not celebrate birthdays. For an agricultural community, these important times may be seasonal, such as planting and harvest time. The winter and summer solstice may be times when the community celebrates the seasonal progressions of nature with religious practices that makes these times sacred. As an example, the Christian celebration of Christmas honors the incarnation of God into the world and it is practiced at the time of the winter solstice (December 21/22), which is the time when the days begin to be longer and the seeds are germinating within the ground to bring new life to nature in the…
