Choral Speaking
Good morning, everyone,
We, SMK St. Joseph Miri, would like to present a choral speaking performance entitled “Colourful Malaysians”
Malaysians are an interesting lot in South East Asia
We are a mélange of colours, creeds and cultures
Among us you can see Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans and other indigenous ethnic groups.
Many of us are bilingual,trilingual and quadrilingual, being able to speak more than one language.
It’s not a surprise to see Ahmad being able to speak Malay and English
Puyang being able to speak Malay, Kayan and Iban
And Ah Meng being able to speak English, Chinese, Hokien and Hakka.
We profess different religions.
Khairunisa is a Muslim,
Gillian a Christian, Neeta a Hindu,
And Ah Meng a Buddhist.
We celebrate a motley assortment of festivals.
The Malays celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri,
The Chinese celebrate Lunar New Year,
The Indians celebrate Thaipusam and Deepavali,
The Ibans celebrate Gawai.
We can live under one roof in peace and harmony. We look like a rainbow in the sky. We are One Malaysia!
My friends, it cannot be denied that we have many good qualities. However, we are also notorious for our idiosyncrasies.
From the break of dawn till the dead of night
You can see us eating nonstop.
We are spoilt for choice in Malaysia
We have Nasi Lemak, fried noodles, Roti Canai, Rojak, Cendol, banana fritters, fish crackers and the list goes on.
In a buffet foods are piled up as high as mountains on plates.
We are gluttonous to the nth degree.
Our eating frenzy makes our country become the fattest nation in South East Asia!
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,
Although we are known for our strict adherence to our customs,
We behave like barbarians behind the wheel.
We speed along roads as if there were no tomorrow.
When a road mishap happens—Boom!
Bonnets concertina, windscreens shatter, the groans of the injured can be heard and the muteness of the dead can be felt.
