Choices Have Consequences In Ally Condie's Matched
“You are free to choose, but you are not free to alter the consequences of your decisions” (Ezra Taft Benson). All choices have consequences. Matched, by Ally Condie, is a science fiction dystopian novel that takes place in the Oria Province. When Cassia finds out her best friend is her match, she is delighted and certain he’s the one, until another face flashes for an instant. Cassia faces the impossible choice of Xander or Ky, and tries not to violate the government’s rules at the same time. Ultimately, Cassia learns that she needs to think before she acts, but still go with what she knows is meant to be.
Cassia is a caring, but rebellious person in this story. For instance, “I may be a sorter like my father and my grandfather before me, but I am also my mother’s daughter” (page 233). Therefore, Cassia proves to be a family-oriented character as she cares for every one …show more content…
As proof, “‘Having a fling with a member of Society in good standing is one thing. For the two of you, it’s different. If things continue, you could be declared an Aberration yourself. Ky Markham, of course, could be sent back to the Outer Provinces’” (page 246). This displays the possible outcomes of Ky and Cassia continuing their relationship as is. As the official tells Cassia these consequences, she begins to realize what a big risk their romance really is. Similarly, “All the adrenaline from trying to catch up to Ky leaves me and a horrible realization begins to sink in. Wherever Ky went, it’s because of me. Because of my sort, or because of my kiss. Either way, this is all my fault” (page 322). Furthermore, because Cassia sorted Ky into the higher category while taking her sorting test, he ended up leaving her to fight in the war-- a death sentence.
