Beyond the Pane is Pleasure: A Chocolat Review None are allowed to see what Vianne is concocting behind the windows concealed with newspaper. Away from the public eye, Vianne paints the walls of her shop with Mayan designs and places tribal sculptures on the shelves with care. Young schoolboys peek through the miniscule slivers in between the newspaper; their only means to observe the magic happening within its walls. They watch as the grinding of the cocoa beans begins. With a knowing smile Vianne stirs the cocoa into a chocolaty paste, swirling around and around the luscious, thick brown mixture in her cauldron of temptation and passion. Platters are loaded with delights such as gleaming gold-foiled chocolate stars, balls of chocolate dipped in ganache, and red-foiled hearts to please the eye as well as the tongue, mind, and heart. They are artfully arranged inside the masked display window. At last, Vianne tears down the newspaper for all to see. The townspeople’s hurried pace to Mass slows down as they pass the new, most sensational store in town. They cast looks of contempt at these dangerously tempting treats and…its shopkeeper. “I heard she was some kind of radical,” one townsperson murmurs. “I heard she was an atheist,” whispers another. As Vianne proudly hangs her sign, “Chocolaterie Maya” she knows that her business hinges on the content of her customers, and the approval of the town’s pious mayor, Comte de Reynaud. The Comte is not pleased at all with Lansquenet’s newest residents. It is the holy time of Lent when Vianne and her young daughter Anouk follow the North Wind to his quiet town. During this time of solemnity and conservatism, she dares to open up a chocolaterie—a place where human yearnings are devoured in truffles and quenched in hot cocoa. Vianne persuades the townspeople to indulge in that they will not give themselves. She transforms Josephine, an abused housewife,

    Immediately upon walking through the elegant double doors, the sweet aroma of butter envelopes the air around me causing me to rapidly salivate. The smell of nacho cheese accompanies the butter fragrance and I quickly begin to picture the many tasty treats behind the square concession area that is located in front of me. Candy galore is perfectly aligned behind the glass case further enticing my taste buds. A perfect temperature keeps me comfortable and makes me wish my home's temperature could be this perfect. One well groomed attendant generously overfills a striped bag with freshly popped popcorn and delicately hands it to a young boy standing next to his mother. Colorful posters line the walls around me, showing a glimpse into what lies behind the doors located down the hallways.     De Maupassant introduces the town of Goderville in France by painting a literary picture of peasants on their way to the bustling market square. Their bodies are crippled from years of hard labor and they make their way slowly and painfully. One can assume they do not lead a pleasant and carefree life. The people are compared to animals: "It all smacked of the stable, the dairy, and the dung-heap, of hay and sweat, giving forth that sharp, unpleasant odor, human and animal, peculiar to the people of the fields" (25). The women have "spare, straight figures" and "flat bosoms" (25). In spite of their poor health and lack of money, the men's clothes are "shining as if varnished," and "puffed about their bony bodies" (25). This detail is important to introduce the crucial notion of pride to the story. Even after years of grueling, crippling work, the peasants' spirit remains intact and they take satisfaction in their appearance. The marketplace itself is an important part of their difficult lives. They are scrounging for all they can get, "always in fear of being cheated" (26). They are clever and watch their money carefully. There is always an element of pride mixed in with their actions. The women selling their animals "stated their price with a dry air" and when their customer begins to leave they consent to their price (26). As is evidenced by the peasants clothing and actions, pride and honor are paramount. Without much wealth, it is all they really have.…
