First, during world war II, the Japanese had a very strong will to become the biggest race of the pacific, but china was a major threat to their success during this time. During the 1930s, the capital of China was Nanking and which made it a good move on the Japanese side, to attack the capital so that they could weaken the Chinese government. According to Chang, in December 1937 there was an invasion that extended to almost eight weeks. The Nipponese army of japan brutally tortured and murdered the Nanking people who then could be considered prisoners of war since their city had been invaded by the Japanese people. Chang gives several accounts of how horrible these acts were when the Japanese army shot the Chinese by setting them on fire after pouring gasoline on them and then making them run. This was like a game to the Japanese army. Chang listed and described the kinds of torture that were visited upon the residents, including being buried alive, mutilation, "death by fire", "death by ice", and "death by dogs". Based on the testimony of a survivor of the massacre, Chang also described a killing contest amongst a group of Japanese soldiers to determine who could kill the fastest. On the rape that occurred during the massacre, Chang wrote that "certainly it was one of the greatest mass rapes in world history." She estimated that the number…

A purge was the systematic elimination of opponents by Stalin, The assassination of Kirov allowed Stalin to use it as an excuse to begin the purges. In 1932, Kirov had helped to defeat Stalin on an important issue concerning Mikhail Riutin, who had circulated a document that was highly critical of Stalin. Stalin was furious and demanded Ruitins execution. However the central committee and the politburo refused to order Ruitin’s execution, Stalin viewed this as a betrayal. In December 1934, Kirov was murdered by Nikolayev who claimed was working for a secret terror group who wanted to overthrow the soviet government; however Zinoviev and Kamenev were arrested for the conspiracy of Kirov’s Murder. This murder rid Stalin of his most powerful rival, whilst allowing him to imprison two of his old opponents, basically “two birds with one stone”. The Murder of Kirov allowed Stalin to establish dictatorship because with the death of Kirov, it gave Stalin an excuse to purge and the purges became more systematic and far-reaching.In the spring of 1937, Stalin argued that the conspiracy against the Soviet people was not restricted to the forty or so people involved in the show trials, and so the start of the purges against the party and army began. The effects on the party were dramatic. Between 1934 and 1938, some 330,000 party members were convicted of being enemies of the people. Stalin had never fully trusted the Red Army because the…

After the defeat of Trotsky and the Left Opposition, Stalin shifted his position to the left - taking most of Trotsky's ideas and re-framing them as his own. Bukharin supported Stalin as he began to demolish the Right Deviation of Zinoviev and Kamenev, and their supporters. During the second half of the 1920s, Joseph Stalin set the stage for gaining absolute power by employing police repression against opposition elements within the Communist Party. In order to defeat any major political figure opposing Stalin, he commenced an act that became known as the purges, or the elimination of any unwanted competition. The United States of America has just gone through a depression with many difficulties and is now facing trouble with the Axis Powers. The U.S cut iron and oil trade with Japan and this resulted in Japan bombing Pearl Harbor. With that done, President Roosevelt has announced that the U.S has entered World War II. Apart from those troubles, the U.S is now facing problems with its own citizens. The American people want Japanese-Americans to be put into internment camps for the remainder of the War. In my opinion, I don’t think it is fair for people to go to jail without having done anything wrong. But I do understand the way they feel, it seems logical that Japanese people would stay loyal to their country and that the Americans would fear their betrayal and the possible rebellion they might cause. But, the Japanese during this time must have had the same amount of fear as the Americans, they were treated badly and despised by everyone and could have been arrested. But besides that, my stance on this is that if the Japanese-Americans start rebelling in the U.S then they should be treated the same way as any other person because everyone should have equal rights.…
