Chinese Proverb I sit there bored to death, waiting for my teacher to start teaching. "When will he speak?" I thought to myself. Tick tock the time went by. Five minutes later, he proceeded to talk about what we were going to learn that day- the concept of velocity. I continued to sit there, zoning out, uninterested on what he had to say and FINALLY the bell rang! I approached to my next class and realized the Mr. Cole had just taught me a calculus concept and instead of learning it, i decided to daydream. This is exactly what the Chinese proverb "Teachers' open the door, but you must enter by yourself means." In my definition, this proverb means that a teacher can teach you a concept however she can't make you learn it. Everything in life works the same way, my mom can cook food for me, however it's my responsibility to eat it. This proverb corresponds to high school because it is a law in the United States for all children to attend some sort of institution, however we, as students are not fulfilling our responsibilities when it comes to learning the material. An example would be, every year I come to high school and take different classes, as well as learn different things. What also happens is summer vacation, in which I forget everything I've learned. The teachers' provided me with an opportunity to educate myself (open the door) what I didn't do is learn it ( enter the door). It's not a loss to the teachers' because they get paid for what they do, however, it is I as a student who suffers because I still have to become successful in life. My teachers have already reached success, it is I who still has to reach it because remember education is the key to success.

One day during class, we discussed many different chapters of The Daodejing of Laozi. This quote was brought up and we talked about what it may have meant. When class was over, I continued to think about the applicability of this quote to real situations in my own life. Though we discussed this quote in class, I found that it resonated with me because it holds true to many aspects of life which I have encountered, such as my education.…

Every teacher likes to believe that they’re reaching out to their students, and handing down life lessons at a critical point in their students’ development. These essays lack the point of a view of the high school student that is receiving a lesson,. Most high school students simply don’t care. This is not to insult the teacher, nor is it intended to diminish the work of Mark Twain. Rather, it’s a result of the school system in general. You’re average high school student is tired husk, restlessly trudging from one class to the next. As an English teacher, it’s easy to forget that English class isn’t the only class the students have, or that all students, despite what they’re truly interested in, are forced to take all mandated classes.. Your students just came from science and are about to move on to math. After reading a few excerpts with their English teacher, they’ll move on to their next class, where they memorizes bleak formulas and forget about what they had just read, and the cycle continues. The only internalizing they do is what their tests demand be internalized, and they’ll forget the information as soon as possible. Most high schools students have no interest in learning, they only care about what…

What does it meant to be an American? That question in and of itself is already a difficult one to answer. Then, what does it mean to be a Vietnamese American? Vietnamese American is a term to describe a person with Vietnamese ancestral roots residing in the United States. The influx of Vietnamese Americans can be attested to the “Fall of Saigon” on April 30, 1975, which initiated hundreds of thousands of Southern Vietnamese to emigrate out of Communist Vietnam either by boat or by trekking through Cambodia or Laos to reach Thailand (Povell). As a result of this refugee movement during and after the Vietnam War, the definition of a Vietnamese American is still incredibly vague. In order to move forward, America, as a whole, needs to realize that many of the Vietnamese Americans, especially of the second generation, are still haunted by the stories of the experiences from Vietnam and the boat people.…

Thales once said “The most difficult thing in life is to know yourself.” Indeed, you might spend more than half of your lives looking for yourself in the mists of sadness, outlines of joy, or worse, in nowhere that not even you can comprehend what’s happening inside. But Aristotle said "Knowing oneself, is the beginning of all wisdom". Therefore it is an individual’s foundation, the start to fully obtain the essence of life. Knowing yourself is not by merely introducing in front of the class, but slowly—with yourself as your own guide—you will accomplish every aspect of it.…

Early Koreans developed unique martial art forms for unarmed self defense to complement their skills with weapons. The first recorded evidence of what was to become modern Tae Kwon Do is found about two thousand years ago in Korean history. A mural painting from the Koguryu kingdom (37 B.C to 66 A.D.) was found in a tomb believed to have been built sometime during the period 3 to 427 A.D . This mural depicts figures practicing martial arts techniques. Historical records from this Koguryu period also mention the practice of martial arts techniques and tournaments. The early forms had different names, such as Kwonbak, Bakhi, Dangsoo, Taesoo and Kongsoo. From about 600 A.D. to about 1400, the main stream dominant form was Soobak, which further evolved into Taekyon beginning in the late 1300s. Taekyon was the dominant Korean martial art form until the Japanese invasion and occupation of Korea in 1909. From 1909 to 1945, the Japanese suppressed Korean culture and martial arts, and introduced Japanese culture and martial arts.…
