Children and Violence
Children and Violence

Every child needs its parent's love and undivided attention throughout their childhood and adolescent phase. Kids need to be able to trust their parents, along with being taught the difference between right and wrong. Without proper parental supervision, a child can suffer severe emotional and psychological distress. Discipline should be a philosophy that parents must use in their day-to-day life. Hitting a child is unacceptable in that it teaches the child that it is o.k. to hit other in order to solve problems. A more acceptable punishment should be timeouts, groundings, and taking away toys and privileges. Parents should try to keep their children away from watching violence on television and video games, along with teaching your children to stay away from violent situations and environments. Children who watch a lot of TV are less aroused by violent scenes than are those who only watch a little; in other words, they're less bothered by violence in general, and less likely to see anything wrong with it. With proper parenting techniques, children can learn to live non-violent lifestyle, and hopefully teach their children the same techniques.

When I was growing up, my parents tried to monitor what types of shows we watched on television. I can remember that MTV, WWF wrestling, and rated R movies were outlawed in our home. I remember that professional wrestling was outlawed due to my brother and I trying to mimic what the wrestlers did during the show. I am not sure if violence on TV. creates a violent child. Violence is everywhere in the world, including our government going to war, which teaches kids that it's o.k. to destroy someone's home and kill people in order for us to get what we want. The news channels seem to focus most of their reports on violent situations including murders, deaths, and acts of crime. I think that it is inevitable to prevent a child from seeing violence on t.v. but if a parent can limit the

The American Academy of Pediatrics also offers some advice in this regard. They believe that media education can make a child “less susceptible to the bad effects of watching violent TV” (Bar-on and Rich). By educating the children about what goes on in their TV we put them at an advantage of being able to decipher what is good to watch and what’s not so good.…

In modern years, there has been dispute about whether or not children should view, or listen to violent media. In "Violent Media is Good for Kids" Gerard Jones says that we should. "When we try to protect our children from their own feelings and fantasies, we shelter them not against violence but against power and selfhood." Jones is right to say this; violent media can help kids if it is used in the right way rather than being abused. He does not include statistics to back-up his arguments and that is a downfall of Jones's article. He does however include examples as to why he believes that violent media is good for children. His examples maybe far-fetched, but when you think about it, he has a good point violent media is good for kids if used in a specific aspect. Therefore, instead of trying to keep the kids away from the media we should teach them how to use it correctly so that it is productive rather than…

Media does not help in this constant debate since many feel as though outlets such as TV shows, movies and games promote violence especially in youth. However in studies where children were observed before and after viewing violent shows on TV, they did become more aggressive meaning there is a correlation between watching TV and acts of aggression but that connection doesn’t necessarily mean watching that particular show caused it to happen. Meaning a child acting out in violence could have been acting out on his aggression but not because he saw it happen. ‘A conservative conclusion is that mass media violence has a small effect on real-life violence that is eclipsed by other influences… we should remain skeptical of mass media effects until the empirical evidence becomes compelling…’ (Barkan, 2007, pp. 290-291)…

After all, society is to blame because, firstly, children are born without fear and are taught about it through adult experiences or children are exposed to fear and violence at an early age through peers, family situations and societal influences. Therefore, children should be exposed to controlled violence in books which makes it easier for them to have a healthy discussion on their fears and insecurities in the real world.…

There has been much research into the negative effects of television. Television has been linked to aggressive behavior for over fifty years. In the 1960s, Albert Bandura did experiments to test the effects of televised violence on children’s behavior. In these experiments, children imitated adults’ violent treatment of an inflatable clown after watching it happen on film (Bandura, Ross & Ross, 1961, 1963).…

Many movies, television shows, music songs, and video games are filled with violence: murder scenes, nonstop profanity, rape and torture scenarios. By placing scenes like these in the movies for the children and teenagers to see, the media is causing them to become more violent than it already is. What has our society come to these days? Everywhere we look, violence is present; in the streets, back alleys, schools, and even at home. Even if one might be a pacifist, violence will keep its way into our homes through the television. Many parents these days are busy with their work, and sometimes it is hard to keep track what their children do. They are working singles or couples who must rely on others for the parenting and raising their children. Even baby sitters use television as the easiest source of entertainment for the children. Since every family has televisions and the children play video games almost every day, truly the media affects the children. The average hours of American youth watching television is about four hours, which means children spend more time watching television than in any other activity, except sleep, after school. So, parents should control the television that children watch. They need to be aware that media violence affects in the real world.…

One of the ways that violence first had an impression on me was through television. It is hard to turn on the television, whether it is an adult movie or a TV show targeted towards kids, and not be subjected to some sort of violence. Since the television has come into existence, the content that it has shown has become more and more graphically violent. This is because people have become accustomed to what they are seeing and there is a sense of desensitization that is happening. Because of the frequency of the violent images that are shown on the television, the desensitization goes unnoticed to most people. Examples of this commonplace television violence is the shown in many of the current televised shows for children now include themes that are based around violence. I know that when I was a child the show "Power Rangers," although containing a violent theme, was very popular among kids my age. There were never-ending fight scenes that glorified the violent situations. It never seemed to cross anyone's mind how the images of violence could have a negative effect on them or desensitize them in any…

Television has been around ever since the late 1800's in some sort of form. The human race has been around much longer than this and violence has been a part of human society ever since then. We have known many different kinds of violence from punching a kid on the playground to flying a plane into a building and killing thousands. It would be very hard to limit the violence that exists in our lives because we see it everywhere we go, showing that TV isn't the only outlet for violence.…

Children that are consistently exposed to watching violent television become more likely to accept the violence as a way to solve problems. They can even imitate the behavior themselves and gradually become more aggressive in their lives. Parents should pay attention to the things their kids watch on TV and see on the internet. That’s not to say that they shouldn’t be exposed to violence, instead they should see what it is and be taught that it is wrong. The real world outside of TV and video games is unfortunately filled with violence and children who have never seen violence will go out in the world unaware of the problem, but if we teach them right from wrong they will have a better understanding and make good decisions.…

According to Handbook of Children, Culture, And Violence in 1972 the first commercial video game, “Pong” a game based on playing tennis, was introduced (Dowd, Singer & Wilson, 2006, p.226). When Pong became widely available and popular for general public through commercial, many saw the opportunity of making great profit in the video gaming industry and it was then when the technology and creativity was pushed. Financially, video games have exceeded the motion picture industry in sales (Williams, 2002). In the past decades violent video games have stood-out as been successfully marketed and are very popular with male and female children, adolescents, and adults. However, the concerns of the topic that video game violence has the potential of influencing the psychological development of players has been disputed since the mid-1970s, when video games first became available. The issue has been discussed during the past decades amongst both the general community and professionals in the field, and although various research studies have been conducted in to response to this issue, the results are inconclusive and still debated amongst many. The purpose of this essay is to investigate both positive and negative aspects of violent games to determine if video games actually promote violence in real life, or whether media reporting have misled viewers into thinking so. The main arguments put forward in research publications will support my view that video game violence does not promote violent behaviours of adolescents. In fact, research has shown that youth crime rates in the US have decreased since video games…

There are many different avenues in television programming that demonstrates violence to our children. As a child I remember how I feared the killer patrolling the streets with his razor-sharp knife or fingers waiting to pierce my body. I would have never had this fear without the blood and gore of horror films that were shown on late- night television. These movies almost always showed a weak plot based on violent actions, and in the end there never showed the perpetrator as being punished, leading some children to believe that violence can be accomplished without a consequence. Another passageway to violence is through what has been called "professional" wrestling. The WWF is a terrible way that instills violence into our children. This semi- reality show has turned our children into body- slamming idiots, having no understanding that these actions they see on television do hurt people. This display of violence on…

Television viewing is a major activity and influence on children and adolescents. People complain that certain TV shows are having negative effects on their children. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) both feel that TV does influence the behavior of children as young as one year old. From their studies, the AACAP states, “Children who view shows in which violence is very realistic, frequently repeated or unpunished, are more likely to imitate what they see” (as cited in Wilcox, 2004) This speaks to the impressionable mindsets of young children, who are still learning control of their minds and bodies, and are likely to mimic what they see, as it seems quite normal to them. Everything that children see or hear in the media early on in their lives affects them in some way. Violence, sexuality, race and gender stereotypes, drug and alcohol abuse are common themes of television programs. The Academy of Pediatrics says “More than one thousand scientific studies and reviews conclude that significant exposure to media violence increases the risk of aggressive behavior…

Every evening we turn on the news only to see that mankind has developed new and inventive ways of killing each other. Violence has become commonplace in many areas throughout the world. However there is still hope that one day mankind will learn to live together in peace. Violence is caused by a combination of genetics, fear, ignorance, emotional outburst, and prejudice. Most of these causes can be cured by education. However the capacity for violence may always be hard wired into our genes. (www.Yale.edu) By educating people as to what causes violence and how to effectively deal with the emotions that lead to violence, I believe that we can eliminate approximately 90% of the violence in the world. However, I do not feel that mankind will ever completely remove violence from society due to the fact that violence is integrated into our genetic structure.…
