Childhood Memory
When I was on vacation in Montego Bay, Jamaica with my family, we decided to rent out Jet Skies. We went down to the beach and found where the water sport activities were. We rented one Jet Ski for an hour. The plan was for my dad and I to go first. Then my youngest sister and my mom would go, after they went, my other younger sister and my mom would go. My sisters and I all got to for 20 minutes each. So after my dad rented it, it was time for us to go!

My dad and I got onto the Jet Ski. It was almost shaped like a motorcycle. It was red and yellow. I was very excited because I had never been on one before. My dad and I took off our glasses because we didn’t want to lose them in the rough, raging ocean. Without my glasses I couldn’t see that much but, I didn’t think much of it because I was so excited to ride a Jet Ski. After we got on, the guy we had rented it from showed my dad the basic controls. Front, back, right and left. Then my dad started the Jet Ski and off we went!

At first it was really fun. The silky, salty water splashed my face as we sped a long. Luckily I was wearing goggles so the salty water didn’t hit my eyes. We went farther and farther until finally we couldn’t see the shore. It was just blue-green water as far as we could see. We sped along for about twenty minutes. My dad checked his watch and said that we should probably start going back. He relied on me because my dad is virtually blind without his glasses. He called me his “navigator” because I can see better than he can but, I still can’t see that well.

I navigated as best as I could for about ten minutes but I couldn’t see anything. It was just blurry water. Finally, I could faintly see a beach in the distance. I directed my dad and the Jet Ski to go in that direction. We past a boat and I asked if this was the resort beach that we came from. The people on the boat shook there head and mentioned the name of a different resort. So we turned around and went in a different direction.

Our designated skipper started up the engine welcoming us aboard. Everything was calm as we glided across the water. The atmosphere was peaceful, the sun was shining, our skipper/tour-guide was being comical, and I felt hope well up inside me. As we moved further along, the waters became murky and grim. The waves were no longer steady, but crashed against our boat, spraying me in the face with salt water. My heart began to race and my cheeks flared. I still don’t know if the salt I tasted was from the water or the tears that I shed. Our commentator then led us to a boat house. The doors closed behind us as we were engulfed in total darkness, nothing but the sound of my heartbeat and the waves lapping against the boat. I shut my eyes and prayed that nothing was lurking in its mysterious…

The sand was white and the water was super clear. On the beach, people were scuba diving everywhere and my grandparents said we go if we wanted too. When we got on all our gear and got into the water, there was fish swimming around everywhere I swam. All of them were tropical fish so the fish were all different colors. The coral was sensationally close to us and so was the fish. Afterwards, my sister and I were collecting shells and paddle boarding, but we eventually potency back to the boat since we had a…

That night I had trouble sleeping. On one hand I was mad, on the other I was excited. I had never been on a commercial cod boat which would be awesome. It was the other hand that was holding me back; should I trust the man that left me and my mother so many years ago. It was definitely a hard call to make. Just as the first few rays of sun started to poke over the horizon I decided to try it.…

During my junior year in high school me, my mom and some of her friends went on a cruise to the Bahamas. It was a three day cruise leaving Miami going to Nassau, Bahamas which is their capital. It was a Thursday night in May 2008 and we had a flight to catch to Miami. Even though the boat didn’t leave till the next day in the afternoon, it was best to get there early in case you missed your flight because most cruises aren’t refundable. We ending up flying to Fort Lauderdale airport which was not that far from our hotel which was in Miami. When we touched down in Florida it was beautiful. I’ve been to Florida before but it was when I was young so I didn’t remember anything. It was night time and the palm trees was so pretty and the weather was perfect, especially since I was coming from Michigan. We ended up staying at the hotel which was not to far from the carnival porting dock.…

The image of myself in the crevice of the sand underwater and the top layer of the ocean replays in my mind often. I can recall the moment’s features exactly. A few days later, my sister Andie told me how terrified she was seeing my head roll under the water in the distance. It is apparent to me that this is what big sisters are for, her timing really came in at the right moment to watch over me that day. I remember hearing Andie screaming as I fell in and out of consciousness “Mom take her! Mom! Take her!”. Andie had ripped me out of the water as the waves crashed over, throwing us into sharp coral on the shore. Every bash into the coral was a cut against our skin. We wrestled with the land. This end portion to me is all a blur. My sister handed me off to my mom and my haze of a nightmare experience was over.…

After what felt like only a minute, my dad began dragging me out of the water onto the dry sand. The sky is black; the night has taken over. Together, we walk back to the edge of the sand. I think to myself, remembering the time just minutes ago on in the water, on the sand, in the most majestic place. My favorite place. I take the first step onto the concrete. Faintly, I can read the sign which states, "Come back soon! Old Orchard Beach, Portland, Maine," and hoping that I will…

The next thing I knew the boat was leaving the dock and we were headed to our dive destination. The water was a gorgeous color of blue and the scene looked like a brochure from a travel magazine. The boat stopped, the anchor dropped and before we knew it the Captain was instructing us to get ready to jump in the water.…

One warm summer day my family was frantically rushing to gather all our belongings for a week long adventure out west. We were trying our best to squeeze every item in the car; finally we were ready to depart from home. I was just fourteen years of age at the time and had never been more than a few states away. The ride there was beyond exciting, but extra long. I believe most of that was due to the anticipation of when we would finally reach the great state of Colorado.…
