I was coming home from school after looking forward to petting my dogs and then putting my football stuff on for practice. The wind was picking up, and a cloud had briefly blocked the direct sun. I had gotten to my house and seen my mom in a lawn chair drinking water in the backyard, which was unusual as she was still typically at work. I walked into the backyard and said hi when she said " Joe, Wade is dying."…

Growing up as a child was very met morale and a sometimes fun other times not experience. Many memories are developed during your childhood but many memories are forgotten. Memories that are remembered are apart of who we are today an what makes us how we are. These memories and experiences tech us life lessons that we use without knowing it everyday. A memorable day for me was in a lacrosse game in the 2012-13 lacrosse season.…
One dark, chilly September night everyone was gathering at the school for an assembly, but as my great grandmother was getting ready, and walking down the ramp at her house, she fell. Growing up, Sedaris had a good life. He had a loving family that supported him and made sure he was well taking care of. Sedaris’ friend, Hugh had a very difficult lifestyle. When Hugh was growing up as a child, he saw things that children should not be forced to witness. Hugh’s class took a field trip to a slaughterhouse one day, where they were treated to a pig’s execution. “…One of the brothers drew a pistol from his back pocket, held it against the animal’s temple, and shot the piglet, execution-style.” (Paragraph 6, page 109) At another occasion, Hugh witnesses a dead man on a telephone pole. “Unlike me, he left the theater two hours later, to find a dead man hanging from a telephone pole at the far end of the unpaved parking lot.” (Paragraph 10, page 110) Hugh was often neglected by this family and spent majority of his adolescence with surrogate parents. Hugh’s life wasn’t the not good at all but Sedaris wanted Hugh’s life.…

When I was about 4 or 5 my brothers and I were thinking of playing hide and go seek in the house. Our mom and dad were gone on a date. They went out to lunch and to a movie. We called them on the phone to see when they will be back, so they wouldn’t walk in and wonder what we were doing.…
I came back from surgery, now in my own hospital room and spent the night there with my mom. It was April 14, 2009 and my parents get called out of the room to speak with an oncologist. My mom was driving a car full of kids all under the age of nine. My Dad was at work at the time. We were just driving straight down the road on the way to a church function. A drunken man who was illegally driving turned right into my family and hit us head on. The drunk guy did not even care about what had happened. His head was bleeding lots and he got out of his car and chugged a beer before the police had arrived. The suburban was totaled but luckily none of us were hurt. It was a blessing in disguise that my Dad had a bad headache that day. He was on his way home from work early and was only a mile away from the scene when my Mom called him. My Mom was in shock and not able to talk. A man who had witnessed the accident took my Moms phone and told my Dad we were all okay. We were all still fastened in our car seats. The firefighters got us out and we got to ride home in the back of a police…
A few days before my mother’s death, she came home because she was doing better. I was with her on the last night she was awake. I fell asleep in the same room as her until I woke up to the sounds of the ambulance. I was put into a dark room downstairs and left alone the whole night. I still remember that night as the longest night I…
It was my great grandparents 50th anniversary, I was three years old. All of my family members came together to celebrate their anniversary at the Golden Palace, a chinese restuarant. My cousin Erica was playing with me, I was running and laughing while she was chasing me. I was running so fast that when I tried to slow down, I tried to push off the wall so I would not run into the wall. I ended up running into the wall, dislocating my right elbow. I was crying and screaming, my cousin picked me up and took me to my grandmother.…
12 years ago I was diagnosed with Meningitis, they caught it just in time. I hadn’t ever seen my mom that scared, I still haven’t. At the time my mom was going to be turning 20, we were still living with my grandparents and my 17 year old uncle. I was playing upstairs with my uncle when I suddenly passed out, all the color drained from my face, he picked me up and ran downstairs. I was driven to the emergency room. 30 minutes away. They told us what I had and that if we had waited even two more hours they don’t know if they could’ve saved me. I remember my mom staying in the hospital with me, I would tell her I would be okay. I always tried to stay positive. The nurses brought me this huge video game console, I thought I was the luckiest kid…
At the age of 8 I was in the kitchen and was jumping off of things and my mother’s banister decoration fell directly on my head and knocked me to the floor everything around me went blank and I couldn't move. Hearing the loud bang my mom jumped up to see what was going on and picked me off the floor and held me close against her until I could get through with all of my crying and tell her what happened. She put me in the car and rushed me to the emergency room and it turned out I had a concussion when we returned home it was advised that I didn't go to sleep so me and my mom had a contest to see who could stay up longer or course I did. A little past midnight she allowed me to finally go to sleep and so I did. A couple days later I noticed my vision started to get a little hazy which resulted in me having to get glasses.…
