Childhood Friends
FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS

Abdullah Matucan

As I was staring at two kids playing together, I remember my childhood experiences. When I was in elementary, I used to play with my friends whenever I came home from school. They were not just childhood friends but they were also my relatives. We had lot of good times spent together because we lived in same barangay and studied at the same school. I remember the games we used to play and the laughter we shared together.

While staring at the kids and rekindling the past, I visualized how everything had changed. How myself changed from being an innocent kid to a mature adult. How a thin child grew out of his shell and became a productive individual and most of all, how did I adapt to the new environment with new circle of friends. Friends play a vital role in our life. A friend can give you constant happiness and share your tears when you are down. They make you feel comfortable when you feel like trembling with the challenges of life. They are the people who will protect you when someone judges and accuses you with fallacy. Friends are great people who have decided to share their precious life to give you a pleasant environment and a meaningful life to live. These attributes are just few to mention the entire good things my childhood friends possessed. We treat each other like real siblings and we do not let someone feels worst in the group.

On the contrary, not all people have the same perspective with me. I heard a lot of people saying that he/she does not deserve to be called as friend. This claim can be manifested in some cases wherein best friends ended up as mortal enemies. It’s too bad that a person you called friend ended up as your worst opponent. Why does this thing happen? When a person has decided to be our friend, she/he usually has motives. Some may just want to be close to us because we have attributes they like but some others choose us to be their friends because they want

When I walked into the C&L Frosty's restaurant, I saw the picture was still hanging on the wall. Frosty' s had been our sponsor when my fourth grade team won the little league championship. It's been almost ten years and the photo of the winning team still hangs above the ice cream cooler. Since my parents got divorced and I moved in 8th grade, there have been three friends who I've spent numerous vacations and holidays with. These are friends that I not only still talk to and see periodically, but my relationships with the whole families are just as strong. For example, their parents are people I can call and have the same conversation with as my mom, and they are also parents who I can play golf with without my actual friends coming. Aside…

Bigelow and La Gaipa (1975) observed children’s friendships by asking a number of children to write an essay about their best friend using the approach called “content analysis”. William Corsaro however dictates that in order to study children you must study them in the context of their own peer culture, he used the “ethnographic approach”. In this essay I shall attempt to compare and contrast the approach used by Bigelow and La Gaipa (1975) and that taken by William Corsaro (2006).…

During my school years, I had taken everything my Mother had taught me and applied it there. I had plenty of friends growing up. My friends were and still are a huge part of my life, because they influence and reflect the type of person that I am. My group of friends were pretty normal, we just liked having fun, and trying new things. Most of my friends were older, and with me not having a father figure, I looked up to a few of my friends. They taught me what my mother couldn't and what my father failed to. Some of my friends didn't have a father figure either, they learned on their own or was taught by…

As a child I had two best friends who meant the world to me and who I felt I can tell anything too. These girls we’re both my next-door neighbors who I have known now for thirteen years. As a child, you make a variety of friends and every new friend you make you can call your best friend because there is innocence and excitement there when having someone new come into your life. Part of growing up is realizing who your true friends are. Who your life-long friends will be and eventually never relate to those temporary friends you made again.…

A dictionary definition defines friendship as an attachment from mutual esteem, and a friend as someone who is loving or attached to another. As an adult it can seem easy to define who are friends are, they are like minded individuals whom we share common interests with, people we trust and socialize with. Other people within our adult life are associates, work colleagues or general acquaintances. The category of friend is reserved for those whom we have developed a bond with and in most cases an emotional attachment to. However, when we consider this in relation to the nature of children's friendship this dictionary definition and an adults view of friendship may not hold true for all children. It also over simplifies the nature and dynamics involved in friendship. Barnes (2003, pg 49) highlights this when he discusses the many experiences children have of friendship, and the emotions and experiences these friendships expose children to, for example it affords them the opportunity to share experiences, develop communication and develop a sense of closeness to another person, however in contrast to this Barnes tells us that friendships in childhood introduces children to a to conflict situations and emotions such as jealousy, anger and loneliness. Best to leave a line space between…

The word friend means exactly what it is, just a word. The pure substance behind the word no longer bares any true meaning and feeling behind it. I have learned to limit the use of the word and can only call a select few a true friend. Growing up I thought I was popular because I had so many friends. However little did I know that instead of calling these people friends, I should have substituted the word for acquaintances, or in the future outlook of it all, maybe even enemies. A friend is supposed to be there for you through thick and thin. Friends stick by your side no matter what and have your best interest in hand. There for, these people I considered friends, were not my friends, but bad influences.…

Thinking of what has brought the most historical significance in my life is easy, and never did I imagine this could very well shape the rest of my life. Throughout my senior year of high school, these kids had more of an impact on me, than all 3 previous years combined. They were loving, inviting, and honestly sometimes a pain in the butt, even through the bad stuff, they’ve taught me more than they could ever know. I will always be appreciative for how they have shaped me throughout my senior year.…

Sometimes, people think they have new friends, but honestly they don’t. Like true love, you can’t make a friend in a couple minutes. Friendship is a very powerful word. As children are growing up, their parents and family give them a taste of what friendship really is all about. Starting at a young age, it is smart for parents to teach children the significance of friendship. A friend should be someone who tells the other individual when they are doing wrong. They should influence them to do good, give them a shoulder to cry on, and be that person to talk to when sad. Friendships change over time as you move from childhood to adulthood, however, friendship exists in the positive relationships a person builds.…
