This does not even scratch the surface of this issue. However I hope it shows enough to make you want to learn more. Our children and our families are suffering miserably at the hands of a system making money hand over fist being in the business of “legally” stealing our children and selling them to others…
"We must be willing to face the hard reality that preventing child abuse and neglect is possible only when we are ready to attack its sources in the fabric of our society and culture; rather than merely provide social and medical services to its…
The Child, Family and Service Act (CFCSA) documentation policy requires child welfare agencies to maintain documentation about assessments, actions taken and services provided for each child and family within established procedures and timeframes (Smith & Donovan, 2003). Social workers may be pulled into complicated battles between divorcing parents, child custody, or child abuse charges, which summon detailed documentation for someone in authority to use in decision-making (Leon & Pepe, 2010). Specially, “professionals in the child welfare system understand that if it is not written down, it is as if it never happened” (Mallon, Hess, & ebrary, 2005, 2010, p. 6). The child welfare caseworkers can be subpoenaed to produce client records and…
Children and teen-agers in the care of the Department of Children’s Services are struggling to cope with and deal with the traumatic and confusing events that brought them into care. Their lives have become chaotic and they may feel alone and depressed; often the most stable person in their lives is their caseworker. “Traumatic experiences and an increased susceptibility for further wounds from unstable environments created in foster care continue to increase the vulnerability of this already fragile population” (Jones Harden, 2004, p.30). Caring for children and youth in foster or substitute care can be truly complicated and demanding. When a child is in custody the state is to assume full responsibility for a child‘s well-being and permanency.…
This paper describes the typical progression a child makes through a state 's child welfare system. Each state 's child welfare agency is responsible for ensuring the safety and well being of children. Child welfare systems have several chief components:…
According to Maryland Child Protective Services, the core goals of CPS is to, “Protect children and assist parents or caretakers in providing proper care and attention to children, remedy and decrease the risk of continuing abuse and neglect, [and] provide an alternate plan of care for children when parents or caretakers are unable to prove proper and safe care for them.” This can be translated to, their goal is to help children to grow up safe and free. Democratic values, can be summarized as equality, justice and liberty. According to ushistory.com, “Democratic values support the belief that an orderly society can exist in which freedom is preserved. But order and freedom must be balanced.” Child Protective Service’s goals speak about freedom when it talks about finding a remedy, as well as, when it speaks about finding an alternate plan. CPS supports the democratic values, because its goal is to fix a broken society. When children are abused they lose their freedom, thus order and freedom are not balanced. CPS attempts to fix the inequivalent.Next, is social justice. Social justice and CPS’s goals are very similar. According to naswdc.com, “Beneath this practicality lies a strong value system that can be summarized in two words: social justice. Social justice is the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities. Social workers aim to open the doors of access and opportunity for everyone, particularly those in greatest need.” CPS’s goals are to give children social justice. Lastly, CPS’s goals are consistent with the values of professional social work. According to socialworkers.org, social work’s values are “service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence.” CPS’s goals are consistent with these, because CPS…
Children and adolescents involved with child welfare, especially those who are removed from their family of origin and placed in out-of-home care, often present with complex and serious physical, mental health, developmental, and psychosocial problems rooted in childhood adversity and trauma. As such, they are designated as children with special health care needs. There are many barriers to providing high-quality comprehensive health care services to children and adolescents whose lives are characterized by transience and uncertainty.…
Anxiety disorders involve disturbances in the capacity to regulate anxious states, and result from complex interactions among biological, genetic, familial, temperamental, development, and environmental factors (source). Anxiety disorders are the most common diagnosed disorders in adolescent populations, including the child welfare population, which this assignment will focus on (source). The prevalence rate for anxiety disorders in the child welfare population is between 9% and 20% (source). Youth in foster care are a frequently marginalized population that encounters extensive stressors both past and present. These stressors negatively affect their health and mental health care needs. The traumatic family histories and accumulated losses of many youth in foster care result in increased risk for mental health problems (source). Research demonstrates among youth in the child welfare system, 61% of 17 year olds have at least one lifetime mental health disorder (source). Youth existing foster care do not leave their psychological problems behind them and these problems can exacerbate by the change in…
The foster care social service system is designed to ameliorate adverse family and environmental conditions that may interfere with typical child development. Currently, the system provides both interim and longstanding out- of- home placement of children whose biological parents have been deemed unable to provide adequate care. The number of children being placed in the foster care system is increasing annually and unfortunately, most of these children have been the victims of repeated abuse and prolonged neglect. Thus, they have not experienced a nurturing, stable environment during the early years of life. Such experiences are critical in the short and long-term development of a child's brain and the ability to subsequently function soundly…
Historically, Native American tribes have struggled to keep their unique culture identities. This is largely due to the actions made by the federal and state governments as a result of ethnocentrism and indifference. In order to maintain cultural identity, generational traditions must continue from parents to their children and their children’s children. It is the very essence of how culture lives on in families and generations (Basic, 2004). From the time of the 1800’s, the Boarding School Movement, backed by the Federal Government, began the attempted cultural annihilation of the Native…
The one child policy in 1979 in an attempt to slow the rapidly growing population, initiated by Chinese officials has led to a multitude of uncalculated and sudden catastrophic impingements. These impingements have had, and will continue to have, large scale effects on China’s population. The Chinese government has begun to feel the recoil of their one child policy after the discovery was made that there is an approximant 120 to 100 ratio of males to females in China. This was a crucial discovery for the Chinese officials investigating the other unintended effects of the implantation of the one child policy. The one child policy has been linked to an increase in: human trafficking, birth tourism, social disabilities, crime, and single men.…
In order to enhance children’s access to education, health facilities and to protect them from abuse, neglect, discrimination, violence and exploitation, the Government of Pakistan has undertaken various policies, legislative, administrative and…
Every day I sit down to watch the news. Every day I see accidents together with its after effects of lives lost and mourning families. Every day, stories that would really get my heart shed tears concerns that of children—rightfully entitled for care and unconditional love, but rather have gone through abuse and neglect. No child is ever suited to receive an act of omission by parents, failing to act as their own children’s advocate. These children’s advocacy then extends to institutions, groups, and individuals who are best able to fill in the gap of welfare that is supposedly given from their first breath of life.…
