Imagine living a life you fear, one you have to keep a secret. Always pretending to be happy and carefree when deep down thinking, "Please don 't let this day be the last." Living in a house where painful marks and scars are hidden by long sleeves, and jeans. Looking over your shoulder wondering when the next assault is going to be. “Almost five children die every day as a result of child abuse. More than three out of four are under the age of 4.” (Prevent Child Abuse America: Current Trends in Child Abuse Reporting & Fatalities: The 2000 Fifty State Survey) Child abuse is a terrible problem well known not only in America, but also around the world. Abuse leaves not only physical scars with children, but the more painful emotional scars that last forever.
A Child Called “It” by author David Pelzer is an incredibly emotional and vivid story of the experiences of a young boy. Pelzer describes how he endured unthinkable abuse at the hand of his own mother. He provides detailed accounts of the abuse and neglect as well as the emotions and pain he endured, his struggle to cope and survive, and how he eventually was freed from her and the hell he was living. A Child Called “It” is a disturbingly real example of how children are victimized through various forms of abuse. "A Child called It" is a book that is known to be one of the worst documented cases of child abuse. Dave had to endure numerous types of abuse such as starvation, cruelty and torture for the majority of his childhood. When reading this book, I was shocked by the different levels of cruelty that Dave faced. I was amazed on how this book had a major impact in my life. Being married to a man that had to endure similar situations (not quite so cruel) I knew when we started to have children I would have to be more open on discipline and also be more willing to discuss situations on how to handle them.
