There are many different opinions out there about cheerleaders, many good, and some bad. Some people think of them as the girls standing by the football field, but I think of cheerleading as a symbol of all the spirit that we can share, and a token of appreciation toward the team that’s being cheered on. Cheerleading is such a vital part to many sections of the school. If I, Casey Harvel, were chosen to be a captain for the Michigan City High School squad, not only would I make sure that any negative opinions were squashed, but the great qualities the squad holds, are emphasized and constantly challenged.…
What is the definition of a sport? A sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team is competing against one another to win. The sport cheerleading contains a wide range of physical exertion including: tumbling, various jumps and tricks, stunting, and choreographic dances, thus resulting in needing great stamina. Another reason cheerleading is a sport is the preparation time involved, and the athletic scholarship opportunities competing as a cheerleader presents. Not to mention that cheerleading has the highest rate for injuries among sports. Many people argue that cheerleading is not a sport, clearly they don’t know what a sport is.…
It teaches the importance of certain life qualities and some lessons to take away. The cheerleaders compete at compititions against other teams. Knowing this information still makes people indecisive in their decision of if cheer qualifies as a sport. According to Eileen Lofrese (Macedo, 2010, para. 10-11), most people can’t decide whether cheer is a sport or not because of its inconsistency. Some schools may only have a cheer team that cheers at games, but other schools have a competitive varsity team. Coach Stevens (personal communication, January 20, 2016) says that she believes cheer is a sport that isn’t fully developed yet. She…
In recent history, cheerleading has been primarily female but when cheerleading first began it was primarily male(SooHoo). In the 1950s, female cheerleading became more popular, as did the short skirts and pom-poms.(SooHoo). Cheer has been used to promote positivity and support during sports games through chants and cheers. As time has passed, cheerleading has advanced, adding tumbling and stunting, participation in competitions, and lengthy performances. There are many negative stereotypes against cheerleaders and cheerleading itself. Many people and organizations do not consider cheer to be a sport regardless of the extensive amount of athleticism demostrated. There is a lot of controversy when it comes to cheerleading and how hard cheerleaders actually work. I will…
Think again. Cheerleading has evolved over the years from an extra-curricular activity with the purpose of motivating spectators to an intense, competitive activity. Not only is it extremely demanding physically, but also time consuming, requiring the exact coordination of twenty or more girls. These girls cannot have eating disorders or be stupid, because they must memorize a full routine count by count. Why exactly is there a stereotype for cheerleading anyways? My freshman year, three years ago, the cheerleading squad won the award for having the highest percentage of honor students out of the entire fall sports participants. This shows that cheerleaders are actually quite the intellectuals. On my cheerleading squad, only 3 people out of 18 have dyed blonde hair, and I can only thing of one slut (shh). Lastly, cheerleaders wear their skirts short to allow them to be at the peak of their flexibility. With longer skirts many cheerleaders wouldn't be able to pull their leg up and around their…
Some people don’t know the difference between cheer and chants. Cheers are longer than chants and cheers are only played when the ball is not in play.Although cheers and chants are very similar Craig Peters explained it as “Cheers are generally longer than chants and are usually performed when the ball is not in play.’’ Chants are usually performed by the crowd and cheer are performed by cheerleaders.…
The first question in this chapter has to deal with whether Callie Smartt should be able to cheer on the cheerleading team or not. Due to her disability, she automatically made the team without trying out. The second question has to deal with whether Casey Martin was allowed to use the golf cart. The tournament did not let the golfers drive golf carts, but Casey had a disability, so he fought for his position of needing the golf cart for his health.…
All around the world, Cheerleading is known as just a recreational activity. However, many cheerleaders who participate in this activity will disagree. Cheerleading has many similarities to other activities that are legally known as a sport. It is currently growing in popularity among males and females in the U.S.. Over the years, Cheerleading has gotten more recognition for its hard work, but is still not known as a legal sport. Cheerleading should be recognized as a sport because it requires a lot of physical and mental strength, demands a lot of training time, and meets the criteria of a legal sport.…
Cheerleading is a physical activity that I think most are aware of. Some qualify it as a sport which should receive the same notoriety as an even more familiar game such as basketball. Jennie Yabroff belongs to that community. There are also those who dismiss it as mindless women dancing for their health. I myself at one point in my life doubted the aspects of cheering and didn’t qualify it as a legitimate sport. I have grown out of that stubborn mindset and held cheering to the same standards as other sports. Jennie Yarbroff has something to say to the sport of cheering doubters and she defends the sport throughout her essay.…
Opposition to making cheerleading a sport, continually say, cheerleaders are not athletes. Confirmation of this lies in the position paper of Women’s Sports Foundation, "any physical activity in which relative performance can be judged or quantified can be developed into a competitive sport as long as (1) the physical activity includes the above defined elements and (2) the primary purpose is competition versus other teams or individuals within a competition structure comparable to other athletics' activities…Cheerleading in its current format, does…
Cheerleading is a physical activity, sometimes a competitive sport, using organized routines, usually ranging from one to three minutes, which contain the components of tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers, and stunting to direct spectators of events to cheer on sports teams at games or to participate in competitions. The person involved is called a cheerleader. The National Cheerleaders Association (NCA), the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA), and the United States All Star Federation are three of the sanctioning bodies for cheerleading in the USA. Cheerleading originated in the United States, and remains a predominantly American activity, with an estimated 1.5 million participants in all-star cheerleading. The growing presentation of the sport to a global audience has been led by the 1997 start of broadcasts of cheerleading competition by ESPN International and the worldwide release of the 2000 film Bring it On. Due in part to this recent exposure, there are now an estimated 100,000 participants scattered around the rest of the world in countries including Australia, Canada, China, Colombia, Finland, France, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.…
In my opinion I think that Cheerleading should be a competitive sport because cheerleaders work as hard as all other sport players do. For example cheerleaders show muscle, athleticism and agility when practicing and cheering at games. Cheerleaders show muscle because they lift other people they throw and stack people on top of other people to make a pyramid. They show Agility because when doing cheers they have to make sharp and quick movements with their hands and their feet. I don’t think that it’s fair that cheerleading isn’t a competitive sport because it doesn’t involve a ball. That is why I think that cheerleading is just as much as a sport than any other…
According to the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research, cheerleading is the number-one cause of serious sports injuries to women. Emergency room visits for cheerleading are five times the number than for any other sport, partially…
I think that cheerleading is a very dangerous sport if you mess up or if you don't know what you're doing. A recent study in the "Journal of Pediatrics" In October found that cheerleading is the most dangerous sport for female cheerleaders because of high risk…
The poms team is very different from cheer. Poms are very “glittery” as you can tell by their sparkly dresses and their bedazzled shoes. They do various genres of dance. Their team mostly compete in jazz competitions for the poms division. Are school poms is special, most poms teams don’t cheer at games. Last year are poms team…
