Competitive cheerleading has never been called a sport according to the government. There has been an ongoing debate as to if cheerleading fits the definition of a sport which is “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature” (Dictionary.com n.d.). By that definition you could interpret it to mean cheerleading is a sport, but there is much more to being a sport than meeting a definition. Competitive cheerleading does require specialized training, extensive practices, and a dedicated team; but to become a sport there are several problems that must be addressed. There is not a consistent set of competitions, no standard set of rules, and no regulations for judging. There has also been many court debates on this subject with cheerleading always on the losing end. In order for cheerleading to become a sport these problems must be addressed. Once this is addressed then cheerleading could become an official sport and the athletes would be eligible for athletic scholarships for full tuition amounts.…
In my opinion I think that Cheerleading should be a competitive sport because cheerleaders work as hard as all other sport players do. For example cheerleaders show muscle, athleticism and agility when practicing and cheering at games. Cheerleaders show muscle because they lift other people they throw and stack people on top of other people to make a pyramid. They show Agility because when doing cheers they have to make sharp and quick movements with their hands and their feet. I don’t think that it’s fair that cheerleading isn’t a competitive sport because it doesn’t involve a ball. That is why I think that cheerleading is just as much as a sport than any other…
Cheerleading has always been a part of me, ever since I was a little girl. I grew up hearing my mom tell me stories about when she was a cheerleader. She took me to high school football games to watch my cousin cheer. I cheered for JFL in fifth and sixth grades and I absolutely loved it. In seventh grade, there was an actual cheer tryout and…
Cheerleading is a dangerous sport but if performed with proper training it can be as safe as almost any sport. As I have stated above some stunts can be more dangerous than others but overall it can be a safe and fun sport only if you flip and stunt…
Competition cheer is one type of cheerleading. It is usually associated with a gym that teaches tumbling, gymnastics, and cheerleading all in one. Most of the squads have more than one coach such as a tumbling coach, a stunting coach, and a choreographer. Competition cheerleaders have one main objective which is to compete. Since they are competing, the squad must be dedicated to practicing and performing. The cheerleaders do not cheer for other sports such as basketball or football like in high school. They also do not use offense or defense cheers, but they use “competition cheers” instead. Just like being in other sports in school, you must try out to be on the team. Competition tryouts are a lot harder than in high school. You must go through…
Cheerleading; a competitive sport based on organized routines of two and a half minutes, which include tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers, and stunting. No. Cheerleading does not consist of preppy girls from the movies who wear short skirts and who barely cheer at their highschool's football games. It's a lot more than that. Cheerleading consists of hardwork, detemination, athleticism, agility, and teamwork just like every other sport. Whether it's throwing their flyer ten feet into the air without letting her hit the ground or performing their hardest tumbling pass and landing it perfect, cheerleader's put in effort and commitment like any other athlete. Cheerleading is definetly a sport because of it's risky practice, it's demanding schedule, it's competitiveness, and it's growing popularity.…
When most people think of cheerleading their minds go straight to seeing girls and guys standing on the sideline of a football or basketball game. During this time the main purpose is to get the crowed involved in what is going on for the team. The fans more than likely…
After countless games, practices, and competitions, nothing quite compares to standing on the eight panel mat in front of thousands of unfamiliar faces or a high school football game on Friday night. It is a unique atmosphere where there is an air of utter togetherness and positive energy that I have never experienced anywhere else during my four years of cheering. Although it is the most intense, stressful, and time-consuming activity I have participated in, cheerleading means the world to me. Needless to say, cheerleading has had a tremendous impact on my life and I have learned valuable life lessons from this amazing sport.…
As an athlete, you only want success for your team. For me, all-star cheerleading was a mixture of success and anything but success. Everyone had countless of injuries, blood was shed, tears happened every practice. Everything is on the line with this type of sport. Just one mistake and the months of practice can feel worthless. It feels like a waste of time but it only strives you to work harder. In the end, the work is worth it.…
They give comments and a scoring that goes from Poor(lowest) to Superior(highest). At the end of the night, they give awards for each category of judgment in every class(1A-5A) and announce the overall winner of the competition of the competition. Now if I'm correct this sounds like cheerleading a well-known sport across the nation , leaving me to wonder if cheerleading is considered a sport-- why isn't Marching Band. ?…

Most people have an activity that they highly enjoy and would recommend to other people close to them. Some activities that people enjoy can be educational while others are more of a hobby. An activity that is educational that I enjoy doing is cheerleading. I have been a cheerleader every year since I was seven years old. Needless to say, I love the sport and everything that has to do within the sport. Cheerleading is a sport that teaches discipline, assertiveness, and how to form bonds with other people. Cheerleading for females officially began in the 1920's at the University of Minnesota. In addition, NFL teams started using cheerleaders to add a little support in the 1960's. It more than likely originated a little earlier than the 1920's,…
To me, cheer has taught me to be a well-rounded person. And although I’m just now getting the hang of it, having cheer four days a week, plus the out of nowhere added practices, has definitely taught me to balance my school, social, and athletic life. While my final year in high school is coming to an end, I hope my cheerleading career is only just beginning. With the major impact it has had on me the past years of my life, I hope to furthermore my experience in college, and who knows beyond that. With the friends made and the memories I’ve experienced with my team, I really do believe that cheer is more than just a…
Cheerleading is a hard sport believe it or not, the drama and practices are hard enough but trying to juggle all of that with getting good grades and still hanging out with friends is insane, how I ended up winning all state cheerleader and helping my team become our regionals and state champions is still hard for me to comprehend.…
Both cheerleaders and dancers have physical requirements they need to meet in order to exceed in their sport. For example, cheerleaders need to be able to lift and throw 90lb to 120lb girls in the air with ease, jumps countless inches above the ground with a wide straddle and pointed toes, and tumble with extreme strength and charisma. All of these things, and cheerleaders still need to look good while doing it. Dancers on the other hand, have to stretch their bodies to their limits to be able to achieve stretches like tilts, kicks, and the splits. Like cheerleaders, dancers also participate in tumbling. Both teams work exceptionally hard to reach their goals, and are sometimes pushed to or near their breaking point. Although both teams seem to be physically fit, there are still some technical things that are needed by both parties.…
