Cheering and Team
I started cheering about four years ago, and once I started I became obsessed. Cheer is a big part of my life and I can’t see myself without it. I’m proud of my strong determination I had in order to make this year’s cheer competition team. With this school it doesn’t matter if you’re already on the team you still have to try out to compete. Cheer is my passion and not being able to compete is just not an option for me. I worked out twice as much as I had too. And I really pushed myself to get all the skills I needed to make the team. That meant going after practice I’d go to open gym and work out even more. Going to competition means you have a chance to show off your best moves, and prove how hard you work. And Nationals is the best place to really go and make a name for you. I’ve been to Nationals once and my team won third place. Although we were proud to get that award I was sure nothing beats winning first. So of course I wanted another chance to win that, and being on this year’s team I know I was going to be given that chance. It’s an honor to be on such a great team with an aspiring coach. I have grown such a strong connection with this team. If I didn’t make the competition team I would no longer be needed at practices and I wouldn’t have been able to stay connected with most of the team. My team and dedication to cheer is what helped me keep such a strong determination to stay on and make the competition

When the season began, we did not have a coach to lead us, so we practiced apace with the Varsity squad. A few weeks into the season, the Varsity coach found us a mentor that would lead us. As a few more weeks went by, our coach started picking up on more activities, which was too much for her to handle so she left, and we were once again without a coach. The team began to fall apart and it became very stressful for all of us. After the first three months of cheering, we had lost 8 girls on the team. Throughout those three months, my…

As an athlete, you only want success for your team. For me, all-star cheerleading was a mixture of success and anything but success. Everyone had countless of injuries, blood was shed, tears happened every practice. Everything is on the line with this type of sport. Just one mistake and the months of practice can feel worthless. It feels like a waste of time but it only strives you to work harder. In the end, the work is worth it.…

And although I’m just now getting the hang of it, having cheer four days a week, plus the out of nowhere added practices, has definitely taught me to balance my school, social, and athletic life. There are many different opinions out there about cheerleaders, many good, and many bad. Some think of them as the girls standing by the football field, but I think of cheerleading as a symbol of all the spirit that we can share, and a token of appreciation toward the team that’s being cheered on. Cheerleading is such a vital part to many sections of the school. If I, Nina Guenther, am chosen to be a captain for the Burrell High School Junior Varsity squad, I will make sure that everyone has a positive outlook, and the great qualities the squad holds are emphasized.…

I have been cheering competitively since I was four years old. At the age of fifteen, I was given the opportunity to become a coach. As a coach, I work with little girls who are working on the same skills I was at their age. Being able to share what I learned with them is an incredible experience. I enjoy passing on my knowledge and lessons learned to others.…

after all of the hard work and energy I placed into cheer we didn't win… We didn't even place. Done with getting below standard grades and having a constant lack of sleep, I quit cheer for my Junior year only helping out with the football girls occasionally. When Senior year rolled around the football cheerleaders didn't have anyone to help them lead practices and learn dances so I would spend all of my free time with them, while at the same time going to cross country practice and running races every Saturday and then running over to the football field to cheer for a whole game. That was exhausting, but I was a senior so I wanted to have the best senior year possible. Basketball cheer came around and it was basically a repeat of sophomore year except we tried harder and focused more, we pulled through! We took regionals by a storm by getting the title of regionals champs and then went to state with confidence. We performed our dance did our cheer and hoped for the best… We got state champions! Oh but thats not it, we got grand champions. That basically means we won all of the devisions of cheer, and those are 1A, 2A, 3A (thats us), and 4A. I got onto the all cheer team (a team of the best cheerleaders from all of the school in Alaska) and the whole…

them one of my talents and skills. I also have a strong passion for it. I started cheering in the 6th grade, and it has been the only sport I have ever done. My first day of cheer, I was completely lost at everything and I had the word “flyer” thrown at me, which I had no clue of what to do. I was put to do the basic stunts, I didn't really know what I was doing, but I slowly learned throughout the first season. Even if I can't get a stunt, I know that practice makes perfect and it will take just more tries. At the worse times where my stunt group and I couldn't get things right, we just make sure to relax and ask others for help, make sure everyone is doing their…

We weren't just letting ourselves down but also our coach. No one felt the weight of this as much as I did. As the student on our team that had been in speech and debate the longest, I should have been doing better than I was. Me, and the rest of the team, decided to work harder, do better and make our coach proud of us. For me this wasn’t a new feeling. I constantly felt bad that I wasn’t doing as good as I possibly could. I had finally hit my low point and was determined to succeed. There wasn’t much of the season left to improve, but that didn’t stop me from trying. One competition I was a few points away from making finals, the next I semi finaled. The biggest step that year was qualifying for state in Public Forum debate and Impromptu, two of my favorite events. At state me and my partner made octafinals in debate before being eliminated. At the NSDA district tournament, the competition that decides if you will make it to nationals, I was 2nd alternate in student congress.…

People have always told me to follow my dreams. We hear that again and again, day after day, but most people never listen. Dreams may seem so far out of reach, but if they aren’t scary, they aren’t big enough. I constantly wrote down my dreams because they were frequently changing. One dream of mine was always recurring; It was to be a cheerleader. It bothered me that Paynesville schools made the decision to cancel its cheerleading program because I knew there were a lot of girls that would thoroughly enjoy it. Being the persistent person I am, I was determined to achieve this goal and get our cheerleaders back. I spent many nights researching and trying to figure out how I could do this. The first step I took was to…

Each observation location varied depending on which group of athletes was being focused on. The two groups of athletes that I have observed and worked with consisted of athletes from both UNI cheerleading as well as TNT cheerleading. UNI cheerleading is comprised of college age athletes both male and female that are a part of either the co-ed or all-girl squad. The location that my observations and research for UNI cheerleading took place in the UNI-dome, the Mcleod Center, and the West Gym on UNI’s campus. When working with athletes from TNT cheerleading I went to their gym located in Cedar Falls. I received oral consent from both the parent and the athlete if under the age of 18.…
