CheckPoint Characteristics of Orientalism, Prejudice, and Discrimination

Post a 200-300 word response to these questions:
Explain the difference between Muslims and Arabs.
According to current (within the past two years) research and news reports, what are some of the changes the United States has made to policies concerning the treatment of Muslim and Arab members of society?

List two to three characteristics of Orientalism. How may Orientalism and prejudice contribute to hate crimes against these groups? What can individuals do to promote tolerance and reduce prejudice in their towns and cities? For ideas go to http://www.tolerance.org, http://www.splcenter.org, http://www.villagevoice.com/2003-07-08/news/making-enemies/

Many Arabs are not Muslims and most Muslims are not Arabs even though they are often stereotyped as belonging to each other’s group. There are many differences between the Arab and the Muslim communities. One difference between these two groups of people is that an Arab is actually an ethnic group where Muslim is a religious group. Muslims are individuals who embrace the religion Islam. An Arab citizen can be of any religious order including Jewish, Islam, and Christianity. The name Arab refers to immigrant from countries that are in the Arab world, which consist of twenty-two nations. With the Arabic population, the single most-unifying force is the Arabic language, though not all Arabs can necessarily speak or read Arabic. Muslims on the other hand, can use almost any language in the world.

There were very many search results to answer the question “What are some of the changes the United States has made to policies concerning the treatment of Muslim and Arab members of society?.” I did find a few sites that stated the Justice Department had proposed a change that would allow the FBI to investigate Americans without evidence on wrong doing. They would instead rely on a terrorist profile that could single out Muslims and Arabs.

At one point in time the U.S. Census defined someone as a "negro" if they were one-sixteenth black. That is, if one of your sixteen great-great grandparents was of African descent (and the other fifteen were of "white" European descent), you were defined as "negro". In Jamaica, people believed to be of "pure" African descent are described as black. People who are bi-racial are usually described as "colored". In Brazil, there are even more differentiations of those believed to be of African descent. The point of all this is that our definitions are culture-bound and socially constructed. They are, therefore, not particularly scientific and change over time. This does not mean that race and ethnicity have no real meaning. They have meaning because we give them meaning.…

In this day and age, racism and hate crimes are still huge throughout the world, especially in America. One of the groups discriminated against in America and Europe are Muslims and other Arab groups. Many Muslims were targeted, murdered, discriminated against, and have been considered “terrorists” since the 9/11 attack in 2001; many of these people were thought to be linked with Arab extremist groups and have lost their lives because of this. An example of discrimination closer to 2016 is the refusal of many people to help Syrian refugees hide and have protection from their own government. In World History, these people refusing to help would’ve learned that there are few countries in the Middle East and Asia that have been linked to any extreme groups in this area. There is a multitude of Arabs who do not agree with their governments and wish to escape in all of their willpower. People need to realize that not everyone…

Counterterrorism is a practice that is very necessary in order to continue the American way of life. When we think about Counterterrorism, what comes to mind is preventative measures against terrorist attacks from countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq or simply the Middle East. After 9/11, we became suspicious of people who did not look American. This is a very difficult characteristic to ask for because America is made up of many types of people. Americans do not have an “American Look”. In my paper, I hope to delve into the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) focusing on the United States Citizens Immigrations Services (USCIS). Both agencies work in deterring Terrorism in our country. By exploring the roles these agencies play in securing our borders, we will have a better understanding of what also needs to be done to maintain that security.…

Over the course of the class, I learned and understood new terms associated with ethnicity and forms of discrimination. In week one table 1, my answers were inaccurate and at random because of the lack of knowledge. After retaking the survey my answers were mostly correct 9 out of ten were right. This is because all the projects and assignments completed in past days, allowing us to learn about genocide, immigration, faith motivated hate crimes, religious groups, stereotypes and misconceptions. One of the biggest misconceptions that people face on a daily basis is the official language of the land. Some of the elderly keep the conception of white man rule the land and those who do not belong to that group have to adhere to their rules. They also make statements, such as, “speak English this is America”. There is no dought English is an important language to know, but there are also others that come with immigrants from different parts of the world.…
